Mallard being told that her husband had just died. She had to be given the news gently due to the fact that she suffered from a chronic heart disease. Her sister decided to break the news to her softly and Mrs. Mallard took it harshly. She wept for the loss of her husband and became indescribably depressed. As she sat in her chair staring out at the sky she began to realize that she was finally free. Mrs. Mallard began to grow with excitement when she realized that her husband was dead. While “she loved him, and sometimes she didn’t” (Chopin 2), finally she was free once again to be the totalitarian ruler of her life. She sprung up and her sister came to check on her. They embraced and walked down the stairs, once they hit the bottom she sank dead because she saw her husband. While she died of a heart attack, we as a people can’t handle that type of power either. We set barriers and build walls for ourselves to conform to system we live in. While at any moment I could drop out of school, and take my saving, and live in Alaska on cheap land, I tell myself I can’t. All while that it is very possible for a seventeen year old I claim the notion as ridiculous and continue on with highschool. We as a society set these markers and expectations of success on ourselves. Such as monetary gains, material possessions, and physical beauty are a few drops in this pond. This is a would make sense because the author, Kate Chopin wrote this story in the late 1800’s. A time where women weren’t viewed as equals but instead as material possessions. So she demonstrated through her characters the feelings that her and the majority of women were feeling at that time. Just as Mrs. Mallard couldn’t handle life without her husband holding her back, for better or worse, we choose to stunt ourselves. I don’t think that we want to be free, I think that we enjoy pushing the envelope but never want to be open. We choose leaders of our nations, religions, and organizations. As a global society we are extraordinarily similar, and have relatively simple goals. I think that this addition of freedom is what could separate us from being just another animal species. But I don’t think that we're quite there
