Kate Chopin (Catherine O’Flaherty) was born on February 8th, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was born into a wealthy family, who were slave owners. Growing up, Chopin spoke French and English. Kate attended Academy of the Sacred Heart. She was taught by many women, including her mother, grandmother, and nuns. Her dad died in a train accident, in 1855. During the Civil War, Chopin lived in the city of St. Louis which had both Confederate and Union supporters. Her brother joined the Confederate army and died of typhoid fever after the Union army captured him. After they Chopin married Oscar, they went to New Orleans.
