The sad truth is not many families are like the typical American family. There are families whose parents are force to give up their kids to child services, because they cannot afford to feed the hungry mouths of their children. In “Foster Care and the Politics of Compassion,” Nanette Schorr informs and persuades the audience about the child-protective system and the stigma behind it all. Schorr illustrates a case where a mother and her three kids were cast aside from their abusive husband and father.…

The principles of trauma-informed care (TIC) can be universally applied to other practice models, such as the family preservation model. Using a strengths-based perspective is a valuable TIC principle that would be very effective in family preservation. By highlighting a family’s strengths you can use these attributes to address challenges. Noticing strengths can also help build engagement and rapport with clients to help aid in the intervention process. Being person-centered is another TIC principle that could guide family preservation practice (D. Strohm, PowerPoint, September 10th, 2015).…

Foster care has been a process of successes and failures. Originally Foster Care was established for poor and poverty stricken families who were unable to adequately provide for their children. Prior to welfare involvement, children were simply placed with family members or community members who were able to care for the child. In 1636, Benjamin Eaton became the first official “foster” child. Since that time, numerous laws and policies have been set up in an effort to care for children who have experienced abuse or neglect and provide temporary services to families in crisis (Barbell & Freundlich, 2001).…

This week in the field I had the opportunity to observe a CFTM. The CFTM consisted of a Southern Christian Service (SCS) Family Specialist, the potential foster parents and the MYPAC team (facilitator, therapist and supervisor). This meeting was geared towards revealing the diagnosis of the foster child to the potential foster parents. I have very conflicting feelings about this CFTM, because I feel like we blindsided the foster parents. SCS has been working with this family for over 4 months and there is a great deal of work that goes into licensing a foster home.…

Introduction: The child welfare system is a corrupt system. Many suspected cases of neglect (GRTEP defines this as “parents should have done something for the child but failed to do so,” such as denying medical care or not feeding them) or abuse (GRTEP defines this as “Abuse means that you did something to hurt your child,” such as molesting them or hitting them hard enough to break bones) are going unreported or uninvestigated, children are living in miserable conditions (even after DCS intervention or when in foster care), and are not given a smooth transition into adulthood. Perhaps a more family centered approach to ending child abuse and neglect would benefit our country the most. Discussion: With many children living in neglect and abuse…
