Karl Marx and Social Media Ideologies
In their paper “The Ruling Class and the Ruling Ideas,” Marx and Engels argue that the nobility or the highest social class present determines the ideas of a particular society. These ideas enable the few members ruling class to control the large masses of the working people. Additionally, Marx and other socialists believed in total control of the media to disseminate only government-approved information. However, such control also allows them to spread their own self-serving ideologies to the masses.

In the pseudo-individualization theory, an individual believes that they have free choice in choosing the commodity to buy but producers have already pre-determined the different choices available (Rosen 72). In explain this concept, the socially accepted idea of happiness and success provides good examples. Society today encourages the acquisition of wealth in order to gain ‘happiness and status.’ Acquiring wealth allows individuals to gain a sense of inclusion and integration within society. Pseudo-individualism suggests that all items in a particular category are essentially equal and perform the same functions but accompanied by different product designs giving the impression of new or innovative products. Alienation is always present where those who belong to a certain social groups feel they have to conform to that group’s ideologies. Considerations for different target audiences allow the media to highlight certain stories that are beneficial to the elite and downplay other stories that may prove harmful to the ruling elite. Social media sites allow people to spread their ideologies to all their followers instantly, which can be a powerful tool to an experienced user. A false sense of consciousness permeates social media life especially during product selection. Hegemony is last to occur as at this point, the masses do not perceive themselves as subjects of other people’s
