Karl Ernst von Baer was born on February 29, 1792. He was born to first cousins Juliane Louise von Baer and Magnus Johann van Baer. He was one of ten children. He spent most of his childhood with his uncle and aunt until he returned to his family at the age of seven. He married Auguste von Medem of Königsberg in 1820. Together, they had six children.
