I am currently a co-chair of Karen Organization Student Outreach at St. Olaf college. This student led organization was established by my friend and I last year to raise awareness about the Karen people and their culture. The goal of this organization is to promote cultural awareness through cultural engagement in the St. Olaf community and as well as involve in an off-campus community to help encourage and inspire Karen youth for higher education. We have a weekly meeting that discuss about various topics concerning the Karen people such as the culture, history, and the newly arrival Karen refugees in the United States. In addition, we also discuss about how we can reach and help out the Karen youth through volunteer opportunities.

Living in a small town does not open a person’s eyes to all the hopes and dreams of others. Through these three service learning opportunities, Into the Streets, Mary Treglia Community House, and Presidential campaigns; I have learned how they impact our communities, the concepts of citizens, and my weaknesses and strengths when it comes to participating. Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

We live in boxes. Constructed by learned perspectives and solidified by societal pressures, their existence is ubiquitous. At my school, the divisiveness of these partitions is powerful: hatred among my peers is developed from the inability to unlearn prejudices in order to understand the circumstances of others. As Vice President of Sister Cities of Durham, an organization dedicated to fostering global cultural understanding, I strive to bridge cultural gaps by giving the students in my city an opportunity to deconstruct these mental confines. From creating school-wide fundraising events for well building in Arusha, Tanzania to hosting and conferencing with exchange students from Denmark and Japan, I spearhead efforts to diversify and aid both my community and those abroad.…

Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) are unique in both their mission and the demographic they serve. They were created out of a need to undo years of systematic assimilation and sustain 12,000 years of traditions, languages, and cultures. Tribal Colleges and Universities are the direct results of Native American tribes recognizing a need in their communities and demanding the solution. They developed their own form of education, based on Western traditions, to ensure their people were educated and prepared to succeed.…

Brian’s lecture was really interesting, and got me thinking about the kinds of social justice that I am passionate about. I am really not one for participating in rallies or anything like that, so I figured I was not right for social justice, but after reading in On Being a Therapist I realized social justice can be really varied. He talks about how he has a foundation for helping girls in Nepal to stay in school, because many families who cannot afford school for all of their children sometimes sell their daughters to brothels (Kottler, 2010). I am passionate about women’s rights and it would be incredible to be able to be involved in some kind of social justice that works to advocate for women not just in America but all over the world. But again, this is where cultural competency and understanding addressing frameworks comes into play: equality and empowerment does not look the same to me as it does to women in India, Japan, or…

It was estimated that approximately half of Queen's residents are foreign-born and 56% speaks a different language (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). The empirical data shows that Freedom Center would be of an important asset to Queens, as there is a proportionally high percentage of the immigrant who reigned to this community. Not only will the organization encompass cultures of diverse groups, it will also play a significant role in the lives of many immigrant women who are living in the Queen's community. Based upon the data that we had collected we then decided that; to effectively meet the needs of the immigrant women at The Freedom Center for Immigrant Women, who are from different backgrounds such as language, culture, and race. This year has been my first year participating in Global Girls and I can, without hesitation, say that several of the conversations held during the meetings have been some of the most honest, crisp discussions I have taken a part in. My personal belief in the great significance of these kinds of conversations is one of the driving factors for my interest in being co head of Global Girls. If selected as co-head, I will really focus on creating more of these organic conversations that speak about the core of an issue. The importance of brisk, articulate conversations was really emphasized to me during my participation in the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in December of last year. I was chosen, along with four other Brearey girls, to go to this conference in Atlanta, Georgia and I had the privilege of engaging in conversations with teenagers from around the country about different social…

As Vice President of the Student Body, I created and chaired the Diversity Affairs Committee, which established a dialogue between international students at the fifth most diverse campus in the United States and their student government. This led to plans for a more thorough international student orientation; more diverse meal options that can accommodate dietary restrictions from various cultures; and (fingers crossed) plans for more affordable student…

I chose to attend the Cultural Center Open House for the purpose of this assignment. The event proved to be a very interesting experience that gave me a sense of belonging. This event helped me realize the importance of cultural centers, especially in schools as large as the University of Connecticut, containing over 30,000 students. Often, it is easy to feel lost due to the size of both the campus and the student population. However, going to the Cultural Center Open House, made me realize that if I ever felt misplaced and needed a reminder of my culture, I could go to the African American Cultural Center for that purpose.…
