Primarily, Dr. Wilson’s expectations for submitted assignments were unclear. Because our submitted assignments were not returned to us with clear feedback and we only attended the fourth hour on less than a handful of occasions, we were unable to understand what he was looking for in our writing. Dr. Wilson, while promising for most of the semester to give feedback in a timely manner, to improve for the next assignment, almost never provided insight for improvement.
Beginning with our exam essays, on exam day, Dr. Wilson provided three prompts for us to choose from to construct an essay in a fifty minute time …show more content…
The responses first began as summaries, then moved to analyses, and eventually evaluations. Dr. Wilson indicated that each student would receive feedback on their weekly writing assignment prior to the next weekly writing assignment, so that we may improve. Because these assignments accounted for ten percent of our grade, they make a letter grade difference in our final letter grade. Dr. Wilson only graded ONE weekly writing assignment that was returned to us. It was the first one, due and submitted on January 13, 2017, where the majority of the class received C’s. Exhibit B and exhibit C show the feedback Dr. Wilson provided on a small summary of a chapter of a book. This is the most constructive feedback we have received all semester long, however, it did not help us improve our writing. As we continued to read the book, we completed a writing assignment on each chapter and turned it in. We often asked Dr. Wilson about our grades on these assignments, and we never got a clear answer, as we never got our grades on any of the assignments except the first one. Eventually, our classmate John, asked Dr. Wilson how he planned to grade the weekly writing assignments, and was told that it would be based off of completion if we generally alluded to the content of the chapter and met the 400 word count …show more content…
We were assigned a religious holiday, and we were supposed to write an essay on it and create a powerpoint to go with it. That’s all the instruction we had. We were not sure of how to approach the essay, and what details he might expect to find. Amanda, Michael, and their classmate were assigned to Maundy Thursday, a Christian holiday that acknowledges the washing of the feet that occurred between Jesus and his disciples. After collaborating and writing our essay and powerpoint, we submitted it and never heard of it again. Amanda went to see Dr. Wilson during office hours regarding an assignment, and asked him if he had graded it. She was told that the group (our group) received a B on the assignment, and he told her that the definition of “Maundy” was not present in the project. However, on the grade line he sent us, he indicated that we received a 78 on the paper a week or so before the semester was over. The project was submitted in March, and he could not have averaged the assignment with any other collaboration because it is the only collaboration assignment we have done all semester (we only attended fourth hour about 3 or 4 times the entire semester). In a writing instruction class, the extra hour is of no benefit if it is cancelled almost every time. Whether it be from professor Wilson not wanting to have the class, being sick, or
