Beauty is a social concept created by society to oppress women. There is so much pressure, especially with teenage girls, to conform to the beauty standards that were set by society. It is illustrated by the media that women must wear revealing clothing, have long hair, wear lots of makeup, be young and thin with curves. For instance, look at any female celebrity. More often than not, she will have long hair, a slim waist, wear lots of makeup and revealing clothing. The media tells females that in order to be famous or well-known, you must be visually appealing to society. Many teenage girls idolize celebrities and want to be just as their idols are in their looks, clothing, etc. Society should not have young girls basing their body image expectations …show more content…
Had they not had their backsides, chests or lips surgically enhanced, the Kardashian family would not be as famous or wealthy as they are. Women should not be obligated to look good just to be well-liked. As these women fit into society's beauty standards so well, they often have any other traits forgotten about because of their beauty, like many women in society. A study was done in Italy about the percentage of callbacks for job interviews. The researchers sent out ten thousand resumes, changing only the name, picture and address on them. The average-looking women received a seven percent callback rate, while the attractive women received a fifty-four percent callback rate, for the same resume. There is a drastic difference in the amount of callbacks, based solely on the appearance of the women. This shows that women must be attractive to be hired for a job, which illustrates oppression. Another reason that beauty oppresses women is because of stereotypes. Stereotypically, attractive women (especially blonde women) are thought to be less intelligent, hardworking, faithful and humorous as an average-looking women.
