There is a hero in everyone. Even though there are several differences in them each hero shares a common characteristic. In the film Karate Kid produced in 1984 by Jerry Weintraub Daniel, the main character, is forced to move to California and when he arrives there encounters Johnny, the leader of the karate group called the Kobra Kai. After being bullied for several days by Johnny and his gang of friends Daniel then sets out for revenge and trains with Mr. Miyagi in order to get revenge on the Kobra Kai and their leader. Joseph Campbell’s novel, Hero With a Thousand Faces he outlines a character's main archetypal passage. He started it all with moving to California with his mother and then joining a new school. ”Hey uh, Where you from? New Jersey.”(The Karate Kid 1984). At this school Daniel finds a girl who had recently broken up with her past boyfriend and almost immediately fell in love with her. It turns out that her past boyfriend was a boy named Johnny and he still had a lot of feelings for her. This drove him into bullying Daniel with his group the Kobra Kai his friends and or karate group. Daniel then set out for revenge on Johnny and his gang thus he began his training with the janitor of his new apartment complex. This departure is very similar to the one in the book When The Legends Die By: Hal Borland as the main character, Tom Black Bull, has a very relatable slow start. It began with his father murdering a man after he was being a nuisance with Tom’s family thus forcing them to move out and go into hiding. “ He said I'am going to kill Frank No Deer for this.” (Borland 12). Therefore, a hero speaks to us every day through their actions and uphold several values that people in the real world thrive to contain. Every person in the world has the ability to be a hero. In the movie The Karate Kid and novel When the Legends Die the hero archetype from Joseph Campbell is very evident but has some pieces missing. Through understanding hero’s and the hero’s journey we can all recognize that our lives and stories as we know them all contain the hero’s journey in some way.
