Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a cancer of connective tissue that develops as a result of infection with HHV-8. This virus is also known as Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV). KSHV infects endothelial cells, or cells that line the inside of blood and lymphatic vessels, and is characterized by raised lesions on the skin or other endothelial membranes. Age, race, ethnicity and disease state are all risk factors for this disease. There are four known types of KS: classic, endemic, acquired, and epidemic. Classic KS is a rare form found mostly in Eastern European Jewish men, progresses slowly, and is characterized by lesions on the lower limbs.
