Are we “the people” able to think freely without the backlash of societal views, values, and attitudes? A great example is the recent twitter scandal of music producer and rapper Kanye West, where he is scrutinize for his “400 years of slavery sounds like a choice” comment during a TMZ interview, his support for Trump, amongst other questionable statements he’s made in the past week. Kanye West is known for his outspoken and racy commentary that it should not be a surprise that he is the center of controversy once again. Fans are deeply disappointed and embarrassed by his statements;however, they’ve tried to see his point of view. One fan letter that resonated the most was “Your true fans are a compassionate people...But while we encourage your stream of consciousness ‘til you’re spent, times have changed...Your words have inflicted pain, dear Kanye, and I hope it helps you understand why, as a fan, observing the intersection of art, controversy, trauma and freedom, I choose to put the tracks I love so dearly on pause.” So many fans have said that they’ve missed the “old” Kanye due to his older music which is a bearer for urban realities of life and college education as a college drop. The black community feels like they’ve lost another artist to mainstream media, fame and rich lifestyle which makes him a “lost” soul to the realities of the world. Kanye made good points during his TMZ interview that express how we can have free thoughts only if the public also agree with those thoughts. Famous musicians, actors and actresses also chime in to debunk his 400 years of slavery statement. Director Spike Lee took to instagram to express how slavery built America from the ground up on a land that was stolen from Native Americans. Musician Will.iam express his thoughts on twitter stating that strategic conditioning & education deprivation is the root of the issues we face in America. Lastly, civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson, wrote, “Kanye’s rhetoric continues to fuel the racist right-wing folks who believe that black people are responsible for their oppression.” All these statements are undeniably true; however, none of these comments counteracts what Kanye had said. Kanye never suggested that strategic conditioning is not an issue nor did he express that slavery did not built America. He simply pointed out that we made a choice from the options we were given either continue to be a slave, try to runaway, or die trying to reach the freedom you've been praying for. We’ve basically accepted the title as “slave” and continue to be stagnant in society. African-Americans understand that the system are against us, but what are we doing to make our lives better?
