When you think of a leader, chances are you do not think about a rapper. Nevertheless, one that can be expected to be sporting overalls on stage one day, and is meeting with the President on another. Even more confusing, he has not released a studio album, but has won three Grammy awards. He was the first artist to perform on Saturday Night Live without a studio record deal and even participated in a recent Kit-Kat advertising campaign. I am describing one of the most influential and inspiring celebrities of our time, Chance the Rapper. Chance’s full name is “Chancellor Jonathan Bennett” from Chicago, Illinois. Growing up in Chicago, he was exposed to hip hop regularly but never started to listen to the genre until he bought Kanye West’s Debut album The College Dropout. His songs clearly fall into the hip-hop genre, but have a jazz and gospel twist. His songs have been called “colorful” and “creative” due to his uncommon styles. His music style is not the only kind that stands out, his fashion is fairly unconventional too. He has designed a few Chicago White Sox hats and strives to “redefine fashion” by wearing clothes that set him apart, like overalls as I mentioned in the first paragraph. This is partly to help self advertise, since he does not have a studio to put his name out for him. Although he has not been hindered by being almost alone in it all. Chance exclusively streams his music on apps like Soundcloud and Spotify and has still managed to win Grammy Awards for “Best New Artist” and “Best Rap Performance” The level of freedom has made a proudly independent artist that has come a long way against all odds. Recently however, he has gained a lot of momentum in the mainstream audience. He hopes to use all of the attention to focus on the problems that his home town, as well as his country face
