Kant's View On Lying

Decent Essays
Kant's philosophy does not allow for exceptions and some believe that this contracdicts common experience. I truly believe Kant's views on lying is to strict for any normal person to live with.
Sometimes you must tell a lie in order for the good of all. Example is if you know that providing the true would lead to the death of a person then a little lie is a good thing however it should not be a common pratice.

In relation to lying, Kant is concerned that the action cannot be universalized. Kant believes actions should be universal because those actions are assisting in the function of society. An immoral action does not help the action function well. In the case of lying, the trust necessary to form a society is eroded and the society cannot function. Thus, lying is an action that cannot be morally permissible.…

He said that “lying under any circumstances is the obliteration of one’s dignity as a human being” (Rachels 131). In defense of his position, Kant offers two arguments for an absolute rule against lying. He relies on the categorical imperative theory. He claims that we could not will a universal law that permits lying, because such a law would be self-defeating and everyone would lie to each other and as a result, they would lack trust on each other. Therefore, he concludes that lying cannot be permitted.…

It is a way of escaping the reality of a problem or it is a last resort because you do not want to embarrass yourself by being honest. Moreover, the adage “honesty is the best policy” does not always ring true for many. Sometimes we have to lie in order to get to the truth. In Stephanie Ericsson’s “The Ways We Lie,” we find that lying is a natural and unavoidable act.…

The excerpt written by Sissela Bok, about Immanuel Kant, states that lying is always bad and harms the liar as well as society. One example in paragraph two states, “This is an absolutist position, prohibiting all lies...” this means that Kant forbids all lies no matter what they are; even the ones that can save somebodies life. Another example in the article states, “...remove any effort to distinguish among lies...” which means that because Immanuel Kant rejects all lies; he believes that all lies are the same, and no lie is greater than the other. The last example that is stated says, “... this means that being called a liar was a mortal insult...” this means that being called a liar is a severe or even deadly insult; if someone is proven…

Kant also talks about maxims and how you see yourself acting on this situation by lying but also knowing that you if you do then you are acting immorally. Reason vs. desire these are the two ways in which you make decision. Kant discusses that reason is the same for all rational creatures which is why you might think letting the murderer know that you have seen the person is crazy but actually isn’t. Kant also uses FEI as an argument to people who think you should lie to the murderer at the door as well. He does this by saying when lying to the murderer at the door you are using the other person merely as a means and by doing this you violate IC or informed consent.…

In “Rejecting All Lies: Immanuel Kant”, an article by Sissela Bok, Bok states that the truth can not be avoided, no circumstance can cause you to withhold the truth. Bok supports her claim by writing about Immanuel Kant who believes that you should not avoid the truth at any time, and having the benefit of being clear and not needing to track the lies you have told. Bok want to show all lies are not okay in any circumstance, whether it’s to save a person’s life, or to spare someone’s feeling.…

In Sissela Bok's article “Rejecting All Lies: Immanuel Kant”, ”A lie, even if it does not do wrong any particular individually, for it vitiates the source of law”(4). Lying to a close friend or a significant other is occasionally improper because lying was more meaningful than showing love for a relationship which causes distress. Furthermore, Sissela Bok also says, “It harms the liar himself, by destroying his human dignity and making him more worthless even than a small thing”(4). Lying is sometimes unacceptable because it can damage the one who is lying and leave them feeling dishonest and untrustworthy. In simpler terms, lying is to protect loved ones from several issues that may occur during the process to avoid causing a clash which can ruin either one…

Lastly, another reason why you would lie sometimes would be if imagine your friend got the worst haircut there were to be and he says does it look good on me, but being his best friend i would say yes, because i wouldn't want to hurt his feelings because then he would be mad at me if i told him the truth that his hair looks so dumb on him. So be telling the lie you save ones of guy friendships. In the article “Rejecting All lies: Immanuel Kant” argues that Sissela Bok discusses that you should never lie because it's moral insult-perhaps because even for legal action or duel; to be proved a liar could lead to self-exile of shame and even worse, it harms the liar himself , by destroying his human dignity and making him more worthless even than a small thing. I disagree with Sissela because if you are always tell the truth want is a lie depended on saving someone life.…

Lying is done in order to prevent the truth from being found out. Personally, I am a bad liar. Moreover, I don’t like to lie about things because it leaves me with a guilty conscience afterwards. Lying is wrong because it has many dreadful consequences such as losing the trust of another person since you lied to them also it could demolish your relation with that person although there are certain cases in which lying can actually be seen as something exceptional. For example, you might want to lie if you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings in the event that you know that the truth will hurt their feelings.…

Sixty-five percent of people questioned, believed it is okay to lie to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. “In a poll of 1,000 adults taken, four out of ten people said it was okay sometimes to exaggerate a story to make it more interesting. “ I firmly believe lying is acceptable in our society. Lying is justified when it can be used to protect and care for others. For example in the article U.S. Political Campaign, it says “Anne Frank survived as long as she did because those sheltering her and her family lied to the Nazis.…

In “The Ways We Lie” by Stephanie Ericsson she discusses and breaks down the activity of lying into different kinds of lies. Ericsson goes into great detail of about 10 of them, but there are many more. Some lies are for your peace of mind and maybe still bad for both parties, and some are for the better of someone else’s feelings. Ericsson believes that even if you feel you are perfect, nobody is and still tell lies no matter big or small, we do it and at times are unaware that it is considered a lie. Individuals nowadays get to a point where they are lying and don’t know whether to believe themselves or others.…

In the case where lying to evil people will help to thwart their evil aims (e.g. someone intent on committing murder asks me the whereabouts of his intended victim) Kant held that lying remains wrong. Instead of lying, I should simply not say anything. The main problem with the Principle of Humanity is that it’s not entirely clear what it means to treat another person as an “end.” It’s been claimed that it means you must treat others in ways that they would not object to if they were morally reasonable, thinking clearly, and well-informed about relevant factual matters.…

This helps support my point because some people just lie so they won't face the huge situation. According to Kant others may argue about when to lie, but he makes clean sweep.
