Kant Against Abortion

One of the most widely talked about and most controversial topics in the United States today is abortion. Abortion is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy” (Fowler). In 2005 the United states alone was averaging approximately 1.21 million abortions a year (Abortion Facts). That means that from 2005-2015 approximately 12.1 million fetuses were terminated in the United States. Groups in the United States who are pro-life (anti-abortion) have been taking a stand and have been shutting down abortion clinics all over the United States. If pro-life groups continue to push for abortion clinics to be shut down the number of terminated fetuses can and will be greatly reduced.

When we look at these situations we should view them as Immanuel Kant would, situations where we ought to do something, there is no moral right or wrong. If a mother’s life is on the line her potential future values are at risk along with the fetuses, therefore making the decision neither morally right or wrong but rather she ought to have an abortion to preserve her own life. Look at rape and apply that the future mother and the fetus both have future value. Having an abortion or choosing not to in this circumstance does not take away the potential value of the future mothers life. From the fetuses’ point of view having the abortion will take away its potential value and future, therefore you ought not take the life of the fetus via …show more content…
No, when we kill a fetus we are taking away its right to a potential life. In the article A Defense of Abortion it states that it is “vastly more common” for a woman to get an abortion “for some less weighty reason than preserving her own life” (Thompson). If abortions were only tolerated in the cases where a woman was trying to preserve her own life the number of 12.1 million terminated fetuses would greatly drop. As a pro-life group the push for abortion clinics to be shut down should be pursued. A fetus with a potential for life, goals, wants, and needs deserves the chance to live. Taking away that fetuses potential through abortion for no permissible reason is murdered and should not be

Taking a life of a fetus is also taking away a person 's right to live. No one has the right to take away a life of a person, especially the innocent unborn child who cannot defend its authority, the right to life. Adding to this exception, the woman has the right to abortion. IF, a woman got pregnant without her consent, like in the case of rape or incest then she has the right to terminate her pregnancy. Any woman who has gone through this kind of traumatic sexual act should have a right to choose whether she want to obtain an abortion or not.…

Rape is not necessarily the only instance where abortion is better for both beings. Take a drug addict for example, the woman may not be able to stop her addiction at the moment in time she is pregnant, and would be much safer for the embryo to be aborted. If she is forced into giving birth, the likelihood that the quality of life will be good for the child is slim to none. The child may face neglect and even gradual death rather than if the fetus was terminated at an appropriate time.…

For example what if the mother’s life was in danger if she went through with the birth? Would abortion be acceptable then? In other cases where women have experienced incest or rape, it seem almost unfair that they should have to keep the child after such a traumatic event. Every time the mother would look at her child she would be reminded of the horrifying experience. Incest could cause the child to be mentally retarded or…

Abortion is increasing tremendously. There are 40-50 million abortions that occur per year, that means there are 125,000 unborn babies that die every day. Maybe there are some things that are so important that they shouldn’t be up for sale. Throughout the United States many controversial topics like abortion, suicide, having premarital sex and having children out of wedlock are all giving in to the pleasure and pain. When we can be sovereign to reason and reason governs us then we are completely free. From a moral aspect, it is considered wrong to kill another. In other words “…just so long as a fetus is a person (or counts morally), it would be morally wrong to abort it” (11). One’s behavior and choice affect the morality of their actions. Where one has decided to have consensual sexual intercourse without protection and then decides to abort their pregnancy, shows signs that both partners acted recklessly in their actions. In such cases, abortion should not be permissible because of their irresponsible behaviors and knowing they had the choice to protect themselves against unwanted pregnancy.…
