A heart, like a magnet, with return home, on the opposite sides of the world or not. Sometimes it takes a great journey to appreciate the little things in life. It took a trip away from home for me to realize this. This past summer, I spent 5 weeks of my sunny days in Kansas City, Missouri for a ballet intensive. This trip helped me realize the importance of family and comfort. Some people say, ‘home is where the heart is’, during my experience, this statement reined true. I believe that the comfort of knowing the people around you can substitute homesickness, but almost everyone, at some point in their lives, catch the ‘virus’. Last fall, I auditioned to go to a ballet intensive for the summer. The following February, I found out that I had been accepted into the Boston Ballet Intensive and the Kansas City Ballet Intensive. Because of communication circumstances, I accepted the Kansas City Ballet’s offer. I was very excited because this was my first trip away from home by myself. I was very excited, yet very nervous because I wouldn’t know anyone else there. 772 miles. The distance from my house to the Kansas City Ballet School is 772 miles. My mom would drive me to Kansas, and then she and my dad would come to pick me up. Well, that was the plan at least. I gave my dad and sister a bear hug before leaving with my mom. The trip to Missouri was long, but my mom and I had a good time. When we finally arrived, we were a day early. We spent the day scoping out the dorm building, where I’d be staying. I learned from my experience that home is where the heart is, and sometimes you must be taken away from something before you realize your love for it. Everyone gets the virus; it’s just a matter of how you heal from

Friend, As I look over the cornfields of Nebraska, whether I’m working, chatting with a friend, or doing homework (which is usually the case)- my heart often wanders. It wanders to South Dakota where I’ve spent significant time with Native American people and playing with the children there during summer nights at camp. It ventures to Guatemala where approximately 52 girls, some orphans or abandoned, and who have known the hardships and realities of life, spent a week teaching me the meaning of joy. Now it goes out to the place where it all began. I think often of beautiful Haitian people living in the Dominican Republic.…

It was many years ago that I found myself to be away from home the first time. I was a cub scout then and was super nervous. I was always super cautious and wary of dangers hiding behind the corner. I thought that something would jump out and scare me, or drag me to my doom. I felt more comfortable being at home versus being in the wilderness, where I felt exposed to the unknown and maybe the wrath of mother nature.…

Cinderella Ballet The cultural experience I chose to attend was the Gwinnett Ballet Company’s presentation of Cinderella. This experience was the first time I had ever been to a ballet or any kind of live play. I am the type of person who enjoys the outdoors, playing in the mud, hunting and fishing, and I am a tomboy by most people’s standards. When I was getting ready to go to the ballet, I was not sure what to expect, I felt as though I was going to be out of place.…

The Avedon photos were a sensation at the time, and Nureyev's rule breaking disdain for norms and unbelievable sexual charisma were a big part of his persona; you bet he made people uncomfortable. But actually--scene after scene from the dress rehearsal posted on instagram does not seem to feature this full frontal photo. Maybe it does play a key role in much or all of the ballet, we don't know really..... but that is also not the point.…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. Thoughts and ideas flooded my mind as I stepped into the off-green colored cafeteria.…

“Home is where the heart is” a known motto said by many but can have different meanings. Home is symbolized as the one safe haven many people turn back to and have the most affection for. In the poems “Africa” by Maya Angelou and “A Far Cry from Africa” by Derek Walcott both show significant importance of how their home is for them.
