Kamehameha Role Model

Decent Essays
Kamehameha is the nephew of Kalani’opu’u, ruler of Hawai’i island. Kamehameha made a bold move in taking over the Hawaiian islands even if he was not next in line to be chief of any of the island. He eventually took over the islands one by one. Kaua’i was the last island that was turned over to him. Kamehameha was a role model and he was loyal because he rewarded his main chiefs with grants of land. He was a role model because he works hard like working in a taro patch. Also setting an example of industry to his subjects. It was good because its shows people that you should do everything you do a 100% and to never be lazy. The thing that changed was that Kamehameha working hard in a taro patch because some kings don’t even work and they just make laws rule the island. But Kamehameha was not lazy and gave a helping hand to his people and worked in the taro patch. I believe that Kamehameha was an effective leader because he is intelligent, caring, and resilient. He was caring because he depended greatly on on the powerful Kona chiefs and their sons and on Kalanimoku. He is a intelligent because he “declared the sandalwood trade a royal monopoly and he is a skilled bargainer because if he was unsure of a trade, he would not complete it without insulting one of his advisors, such as John Young.”(26) Hawaii might of been very lost because if the king or chief was not a good then their island would be off and if the king did not know that someone was going to attack then the other people will rule that land that you had before because they killed you. Also if he was not an effective leader than his islands he ruled and the people would not like him because he is slacking and not doing a good job of being

The book Overthrow by Stephen Kinzer is a collection of stories describing different events in which the U.S. overthrew foreign and oppressive governments, or simply governments that were not beneficial for America. One of the stories he included was America’s annexation of Hawaii, a massive turning point in our country’s history. However, The way Kinzer writes and retells the story is slightly biased towards the side of the Hawaiians. This makes for a story that may change peoples perspectives on an important piece of history. The Majority of the accounts and sources he credits are Hawaiian, and the U.S. is not as well represented in his bibliography.…
