Kamehameha Research Paper

The Hawaiian islands were first discovered hundreds of years ago by Polynesians, the first Hawaiians. The first Hawaiians had their own unique set of laws called the kapu, and their own land system called the ahupua’a. When Kamehameha was still a young man, he was trained as a warrior and learned the ways of a chief. Many years later, he became the first person to unify, or become king of all 8 Hawaiian Islands, all because he was an effective leader. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was able to adapt to new ideas, he cared for his people, and because he was brave. For example, when Hawai’i became a popular pit stop for foreigners, he learned about port fees so he started charging port fees to all incoming ships. He was brave at the start of his quest to conquer all 8 islands because no-one had ever done it before. He saw that high chiefs put lower chiefs on other parts of the islands, so he did the same thing with other chiefs controlling other islands. This was something that stayed the same, and it was a good thing because he knew which chiefs to put on which islands. He put the restless and suspicious chiefs close to him and the trustworthy chiefs far away. Kamehameha was an effective leader because he was able to adapt to new ideas, cared for his people, and he was brave. He was able to achieve a strong economy, safety and respect for his people, and trade with foreigners. Therefore, he built a strong kingdom that would last for generations to come.
