Kalief Browder was an outstanding individual, who lived in the Bronx parish of New York; Browder never had any problems with the authority until the age of 16. When he was falsely accused of stealing a backpack, also, on duty officers never read Mr. Browder his rights, but unfortunately they did detain him. Browder was in a state of shock while being processed in the state jail facility. He couldn’t believe they were blaming a petty crime on an innocent 16 year old. During this time Browder was informed that he was being sent to an adult housing unit.
The arrival to Rikers Island was the worst experience for young Browder, with the population 11,000 inmates. Once Browder came to realize he wasn’t going home anytime soon , it became a little stressful knowing he was being housed with men in their mid-thirty’s or older. That could be a bit frightening to any teenager.
Also, during this time of incarceration, he encountered physical and mental abuse. Once Browder was leaving out of his cell and an officer approached him and he was verbally assaulted by the officer, then Browder began to become closer and closer to his breaking point. When Browder arrived home he had the support that he needed to have for the media and other local residents. Also Browder’s story touch the lives of many celebrities, but he just wanted to live a regular life such as; going to college, work and live life. Unfortunately Browder was unable to continue his life right away, he was going through the mental abuse still, Browder was even admitted into a psychiatric ward, due to him being a bit off coming home from prison.
