Explore who discover the gold in Kalgoorlie.
Brainstorm ideas on the importance of gold in Kalgoorlie.
The community is celebrating the Heart of Gold Festival this weekend. This celebration leads the students to learn about how do people discover gold in Kalgoorlie.
The teacher will display a picture of Paddy Hannan on the interactive whiteboard.
Ask the students to guess who is in the picture and what is the significant of that person in Kalgoorlie.

2. The teacher will explain that Hannan was the first prospector who discovered gold in Kalgoorlie in 1893 together with his friends Dan Shea and Tom Flanagan.
3. The teacher will discuss how Hannan and his friends discovered gold and what resources did they need to find gold (refer to the Australian biography).
Ask the students:
• What is the importance of gold in the town? Explain to them that because of the gold discovery, the town was established.
4. Then ask the students to brainstorm on:
• What will happen to the town if there is no more supply of gold?
5. After brainstorming, let the students discuss their answers to the class.
6. After the discussion, students will have the opportunity to be a gold miner.
7. Ask the students to pretend to be a miner like Paddy Hannan.
8. Each student will be given a chocolate chip cookie and a toothpick.
9. Explain to them that miners are very careful in separating the gold from the earth; therefore, they have to be careful in separating the chocolate chip out of the cookie.
10. At the end, ask the students to gather and count how many ‘gold’ they
