What Is The Most Deadly Animal On The Planet?

What is the most deadly animal on the planet? No, it is not a bear or a shark, it is a mosquito. Mosquitos carry all sorts of deadly diseases, including the Zika virus, Yellow fever, Dengue fever, and most deadly of all, Malaria. A mosquito is the perfect carrier for human diseases, as they have been around for over 200 million years, number in the trillions, and can lay hundreds of eggs at a time. They cause about a million deaths every year and have been so far impossible to stop. Scientists however, have found what appears to be a solution. Instead of trying to wipe out mosquitos from existence, or just investing in large quantities of “Off!” spray, scientists have found a gene editing protein that they have been able to use to create mosquitos that are unable to carry the Malaria …show more content…
Wolves that were friendly to humans and turned into their companions became dogs. The humans would then breed only the friendliest dogs, resulting in an offspring that possessed that trait. This process was then repeated over and over again for many different things, size, strength, running ability and more. This was how so many different dog breeds developed in such a short time. Controlled breeding was the first form of genetic engineering. Since wolves became dogs we have also controlled many of our plants and animals. Larger more muscular cows, better tasting fruit, and even hairless cats. Genetic engineering is everywhere, and is unavoidable. Humans have recently started to change the D.N.A. of the plants and animals as well. Gene splicing, editing to make fruits bigger, pigs fatter, and vegetables to have a longer shelf life has taken over our normal organic supermarkets. Now it is almost impossible to go to the grocery store without picking up a genetically modified organism. This however, is just the tip of the iceberg, and in the near future, genetics is going to take a huge step

Summary: the article discusses the negative and positive impacts mosquitos have on the environment, as well as what would happen if mosquitos ceased to exist. Mosquitos are infamous for carrying a number of diseases such as yellow fever, dengue fever, and West Nile virus. However, the article points out that mosquitos are an important food source to migratory birds in the Artic, an important food source for fish, insects, salamanders, lizards, and frogs in water pools, they consume nutrients in pitcher plants (which makes nitrogen readily available to the plant), and pollinate plants. Thus, the author points out that scientists are unsure about what would truly happen if they just…

Alongside CRISPR-Cas9 in site specific genome editing are ZFNs and TALENs. ZFNs are a DNA-binding motif assembled as ββα that utilizes a roughly thirty amino acid protein with DNA recognizing amino acids at the alpha helix (Gaj, Gersbach, & Barbas, 2013). These groups of amino acids usually recognize DNA in segments of three. This does not present much specificity in a genome. Therefore multiple DNA-binding motifs need to be combined to create specificity and result in highly specific polypeptides of repeating zinc finger complexes that recognize nearly eighteen base pair lengths.…

Currently, technology is advancing and with that, comes a gain in knowledge and in freedom, as we now have access to methods such as genetically modifying food and modifying babies. This is due to genetic engineering and biotechnology. Genetic engineering is the modification done to organisms to add new traits through the manual addition of DNA. It is done by removing certain genes to replace them with other to affect a certain trait. This can be used in various positive ways, such as to help those with type 1 diabetes by injecting insulin, as they have a deficiency in insulin.…

However, the mosquitoes eventually became immune to thus causing ecological damage such as biomagnification. Suzuki states that this was caused due to the fact that the chemical product used targeted not only mosquitos but all insects. The compound ended up being ingested by animals such as birds there for killing a significant…

They act as vectors for the diseases, carrying them from one organism to the next, including humans. A group of scientists, also using the CRISPR-Cas9, developed a way to engineer mosquitoes’ genes, so that there is a lower percentage of people that become infected with the deadly pathogens. In an article called “Engineering the control of mosquito-borne infectious diseases”, which was written by Paolo Gabrieli, in relation to these new discoveries and what could arise from them, stated: “From the generation of the first transgenic mosquitoes, to the creation of the first gene knock-outs, the discovery of genetic tools has revolutionized our ability to functionally study and edit the mosquito genome...providing unprecedented opportunities” (Gabrieli 1). This great improvement, considering how harmful and challenging battling diseases that are passed around by mosquitoes, is extraordinary. Medical technology can be seen in this quote as undeniably valuable in the sense that it is used to prevent deaths and make the standard of living better among…

In biotechnology there is this experiment called GM animals (genetically modified animals). These are animals that contains additional or altered genetic material. This gives the animal traits they didn't have before. Some people do not agree that this is ok and it should not happen. Now let's look at the question “ are GM animals good or bad?”.…

Most of the food product in America today is subjected to use of Genetic Engineering (FDA, 2013). The correlation between GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) and GE, is that GMO is a term that is used to describe organisms that are produced by genetic modification because of which there is an improvement in the productivity, quality, or performance. On the other hand GE (genetic Engineering), is a term that is used to describe high tech methods that incorporate genes directly into an organism that are not sexually compatible using recombinant DNA techniques. Just like they say every coin has two sides and I will not disagree that the human intervention in creating these GE products can not only be lifesaving but at times can be life menacing to the human population. In my opinion the technology will not only benefit the…

Human evolution took millions of years to develop our current species and to develop the technological sophistication we now have today. The possibilities of human advancement seem limitless and the only opposition we have is ourselves. Why should humanity limit itself over genetically modified organisms? Why do people think humans have gone to far on genetic engineering? Genetic modification is the process of altering the DNA in an organism’s genome.…

Genetically modified organisms also known as GMOs have been an area of hot debate over the last few years. In this article we will explore the arguments for and against GMOs and at the end dispel the fear-mongering and show that humanity has been modified organisms since the beginning of recorded human history; we are just much better and faster at it now than in the past 1,000s years. The goal in GMOs is to modify organisms (generally food stock such as livestock and extensive agriculture, plants), at the genetic level, to obtain better quality offspring. Companies such as Monsanto and other agriculture, industrial giants aim to create plants that taste better, have better nutrition qualities, are resistant to drought, pest, and other environmental…

Starting at the beginning, although our ancestors did not have any knowledge of DNA, let alone genetics, they influenced the DNA of other organisms by selective breeding. Unknown to most, it is believed the first artificially selected organism was not a plant, but a dog about 32,000 years ago. It was not until around 7800 BCE that artificial selection was used on wheat. Artificial selection is still around, but when people refer to GMOs nowadays they are referring to the modern altering of genetics in an organism to achieve a desired trait.…

Picture this: a world where everyone looks exactly the same--ridden with birth defects, religion has disappeared because people can control their environment with a simple insertion or deletion of a gene, and no one is sure of the future because every couple years, a virus that was supposed to harmlessly alter genes mutates to harmfully cause a deadly epidemic. Sound familiar? Maybe not yet, but at the rate we 're going, the world isn 't far away from the scenario just described due to the ever-increasing rate of genetic engineering occurring in today 's world. From genetically modified crops to mice that glow in the dark to bacteria that produce insulin, countless uses of genetic engineering have appeared in just a few short years, and without…
