Kaitlyn: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Kaitlyn always had a hard time getting along with the other girls. Ever since she was in preschool, she could not understand why girls liked certain things. She preferred to play with toy cars rather than Barbie dolls, and her usual attire consisted of simple jeans and a blue or green t-shirt, frilly pink or purple dresses shoved into the trash. Now that she was 8th grade, she was judged even more. Her only friend was a boy named Jordan, who, quite frankly, had approached her one day in 7th grade and simply announced that he was too “cool” for her. That was the last time Kaitlyn ever saw him.
Kaitlyn was used to being called a tomboy, but that wasn’t really something she hid. In fact, she proudly displayed her graphic t-shirts. When people

It always reads in a monotone voice. Ugh, it is so boring!”
Almost everyone in the class laughed, some even mimicking her. The teacher told them to calm down. Kaitlyn felt as if Mr. Brennan, like her other teachers, didn’t even care that she was being mocked.
Kaitlyn felt the increasingly familiar sting of tears at the back of her eyes, and swallowed her anger, embarrassed and enraged at the fact that no one stood up for her. This was an admittedly selfish way to think, but she was too ashamed to care. She burst out of the classroom with an excuse of going to “cool down”.
As she strolled along the hallways, Kaitlyn thought about what the other girl had said about her in class. Is it really that hard to tell that I’m a girl? Doesn’t my shoulder-length hair give that away? And come on, my voice is plenty interesting! She realized that she was letting the derailing criticism get a hold of her. This shouldn’t be happening, I’m better than

There was a sublime library, a rustic drama room with a huge stage, five buildings solely for classrooms, and a large quad for students to socialize. She took a seat on a plastic bench and idly daydreamed about her dog. Dogs are so lucky. All they have to do is pretend to like their owners and act friendly to their owner’s friends. Humans had to carry so much responsibility: school, work, extracurricular activities, social acceptance. The list just went on.
Suddenly, a voice drew her out of her thoughts.
“What?” Kaitlyn had no idea what the person had said to her.
“I said, what are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be in class?” The familiar deep voice said to Kaitlyn.
She turned her body to face the speaker, and much to her surprise, saw the one and only Jordan O’Neil. He was wearing a baggy pair of black jeans and a gray v-neck shirt. As she stood up to look closer, she saw that his blonde hair was drenched in liquid, as was the rest of his torso. Trickles of water ran down his legs and arms.
“What happened to you? And why do you look like some creepy wannabe?” Kaitlyn could hardly contain her laughter at the comical sight.
“Don’t laugh at me. It’s not like you are super popular yourself,” Jordan said indignantly.
“I never cared whether or not I hung out with the popular people. But seriously, what happened?” Kaitlyn

If archeologists discovered my room after its thousand-year abandonment, they would come to many conclusions about my life and culture. They could assume that I was a religious, educated student who lived in a fortunate family based off of my Christian books, textbooks, and jewelry. The archeologists may conclude that I lived in a culture with the freedom of religion and concern for the earth’s resources based on my Bibles and numerous global warming books. Furthermore, my baby teeth, carved wooden art, clothing, and pressed flowers would enable them to use carbon dating to calculate my relative age range and time period that I lived in. On the opposing end of the spectrum, they may come to drastically different conclusions as well.…

In seventh and eighth grade, Allison Clarke’s* murder attempts kick-started the best writing piece I’ve ever created. Let me clarify: she never put a knife to my throat or a gun to my head. Allison attempted murder in the subtle ways that bullies do. She wanted to see me break down, but I was too hard, too jaded by that point to care about what she did to me. Well, almost too hard and jaded.…
