Kubrick has Wendy, a woman, do all of the work, which suggests since she is insignificant in the masculine Overlook, the work she does is insignificant in turn. The Overlook is a masculine structure because only men are in charge of running the Overlook and is a masculine dominated space, as well as being very misogynistic, declaring “women need to be corrected” (Kubrick 1:31:08). Frank Manchel reinforces that Kubrick depicts the hotel as masculine, and females as inferior to men, and Manchel states in the movie, “[Ullman asks] his secretary to get the two men some coffee... [Kubrick] shows the unequal status of women in this contemporary setting” (Manchel). This reinforces women as only seen in subservient positions, in this case, woman fetching…

‘The Truman Show’(1998, directed by Peter Weir) is a film about Truman Burbank(Jim Carrey), a man living in a world entirely constructed for him. Truman is the star of a reality TV show - but he doesn’t know it. He was orphaned as a child and therefore taken in by the TV cooperation and put in a world where everything is a set, everyone he meets is an actor, and every object holds a camera; through which his entire life is broadcasted to the rest of the world. I found this story to be very fascinating and I was interested in themes of the ethics of media manipulation for wealth. In the story, Truman is being unknowingly manipulated emotionally, physically and socially by the media.…
