KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Houston Public Schools is a non-profit network of KIPP’s mission is to address the needs of a failing student allowing the individual to attend college. This strategic growth can be seen after KIPP successfully completed the first year of its pilot class, the fifth grade. Hoping to continue the success, the organization focused on adding new geographic locations and expanding the programs to become full elementary, middle school, and high schools. This allowed the students to remain with KIPP and move up through the grades consecutively. In Houston alone, “KIPP Turbo” plans to grow to 50 schools by 2033. This strategy targets a small group of customers with a differentiated product. KIPP’s narrow market and customer demographic specifically targets a failing student from a high-minority, low income community. At times, school leaders actively recruit students from Houston’s low rent apartment neighborhoods. Of the 8,500 students, 85 percent are considered low income, 36 percent are African-American, and 62 percent are Latino. The most daunting statistic is the fact that 30 percent have limited English proficiency.
Serving these students with a differentiated product is a challenge. KIPP is renowned for their teacher’s leadership, devotion, creativity, and innovation in the classroom. The faculty have high standards and expectations for energizing and inspiring the students to learn. KIPP staff members enjoy a meaningful sense of value and appreciation. Students are afforded a blended learning model, which is both traditional and digital, as a way to give the students a highly personalized education with a small classroom feel.
