In the research study, 2012 Context Study of the Use of Technology and PBS KIDS Transmedia in the Home Environment, it play an important part in evaluation for the Education Department Center, Inc. , and SRI International of the CPB-PBS Ready To Learn Initiative. It was a home study to understand family patterns of media and technology use in the household.
The focus for the research study is to bring the technology into the children homes that are likely to be at risk for academic difficulties due to economic and social disadvantages. The focus is to use tablets, computers, smartphones, video displays, and gaming consoles to achieve a learning environment to promote early math and literacy. The home study was children age 2 to 8 years old and their families. There were 14 families that contributed to the research. The first half of the families came from the east coast, and then the other half came from the west coast. The families on the east coast all had internet access at home, had a computer in their home prior to home study. All seven families from the east coast did the interviews in English. The west coast demographics were very different than the east coast. There were only four families that had internet access at home, three with computers, and 2 did the interview in English, although east coast had five families participate their interview in Spanish. To be able to participle in study, there were two methods of recruiting the families. For the East coast, the children had to be enrolled in a classroom enacting the PBS Kids, had been proficient in English, and complete a parent survey. On the other hand, the west coast had different criteria to be eligible. The child has to be enrolled in classroom at the center, return a form showing interested in being one of the families in the home study, and be proficient in English or Spanish. However, both coast had to be available to attend an informational event or meeting to help them understand the study.
