I became interested in Korean during my sophomore year in high school. At the time, I was learning Mandarin in school and exploring French outside of school. Due to the experience, I was able to gain insight on my learning capabilities and understand my learning style. Frankly, I found it remarkably difficult to balance my study of French with my school related pursuits. This was not necessarily due to the difficulty of the task, but my inability to create a firm platform for me to expand my knowledge from. Alternatively, enhancing my fluency of Mandarin through self-study was much easier, even though Mandarin is a much harder language to learn.
When I was introduced to the Korean language, I knew it was something I would love to learn. I discovered a podcast series that broke down the structure of Korean, explained nuances in the language, and introduced new words to my vocabulary. Another tool I favored was Mango Languages, a resource I used to practice Mandarin, Korean, and Igbo. I noticed that my ability to retain the Korean language in a way that would allow me to communication rather than simply listen was quite poor. I realized I lacked a solid foundation on which to build up

After coming back to America, I will begin classes at the Korean Culture Center in New York City to build on the foundation created by the immersion program I am pursuing. KGP200 is a 10-week language intensive program. Classes will be from Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 1:00pm. Each four-hour session will include speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The main goal of the program is to allow the students to communicate in the Korean language properly and proficiently with others. There are three teachers for each level and seven different levels dependent on proficiency. Each class should consist of 16 students or less. Not only is the program language intensive, it focuses on teaching Korean

I hope to gain an exemplary foundational career experience from the EKU REU program. I was initially attracted to this program because the theme of disturbance ecology complements my own research interests in anthropogenic influence and conservation biology. Through individual research this summer and the research of others, I hope to learn more about the impact of human activity on landscapes, how to approach restoration, and what sustainable and effective scientific study looks like. I am excited to live in Kentucky and learn about its ecology and sociology, having never been to the area before. In addition, I hope to gain practical field and laboratory research skills at Lilley Cornett Woods old-growth forest ecosystem and Maywoods Environmental…

Speaking English properly has been a challenge that slowly I am learning to overcome. During my first year at school my English capabilities were not fully developed. Even though I could read, write, and understand English, I still had to improve my pronunciation skills. With time, being around students and teachers that spoke only English helped me refine my communication…

Becoming an AGPCNP will provide me with the knowledge and training to safely and effectively treat adult patients across the lifespan. Although I entered this program planning to work as an FNP, experiences during the pre-specialty year have confirmed my passion for the adult patient. Specifically, I hope to serve rural communities as a primary care provider, focusing my practice on the management of chronic disease in older adults. My passion for older adults is rooted in the experiences I had throughout the summers of my undergraduate career. I spent my summers with a nonprofit in rural North Carolina partnering with churches, social workers, and businesses to complete home repair for low-income families.…

Like a spy, I live a double life: at school, I’m American, speaking English with my friends, but at home, I’m Korean, speaking a different tongue with my immigrant parents. I would say I’m pretty proficient in Korean; I can beg my parents for Thai food takeout, or chuckle at their cringe-worthy jokes. But when it comes to idioms, politics, or anything other than basic conversation topics, the language barrier sets in, and my mind draws a blank. I desperately want to take part in my parent’s discussion about the upcoming presidential campaign, but half of the time, I’m asking, “What does [Korean word] mean?” “What is [Korean word] in English?”…

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently.…

I didn't mind that my pant size would get at least two sizes bigger, I wanted to experience life in rural Italy before I died. So fitting in a snug size 7/8 I have now checked that item off my bucket list. There are certain cultures and languages that you just find yourself gravitating towards as a youngin'. For me, it was always French, partially because my last name is Franco and I always thought it was perfect if I became a Franco-phone. That and my dad's name is Pierre, despite being Brazilian; it was a no brainer.…

Recently I decided to change my Spanish minor to a major. My reasoning for this change is that I can spend more time in the Spanish culture and have a better understanding of the Spanish language. I plan to pursue a career in the medical field and having a comprehensive understanding of the Spanish language will allow me to reach more patients. Latinos represent 16% percent of the Spanish population and are the fastest growing ethnic minority group. For this reason, I have chosen to study Spanish over other languages such as Mandarin or French.…
