Minority Students and K-12 Music Programs Music programs in American schools have brought students from all races together. Students can gather together and learn to create, to express, and to perform together. Music unites students from different races, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds. Educators understand the value of music in the education system; however, different cultures place varied amounts of importance on music education. Minority students may benefit academically from being in a music program/music ensemble, yet may not have the opportunity to be involved in music. The question to be researched is would minority students be positively impacted academically by having the opportunity to be involved in a music program. …show more content…
There is a consensus in the educational realm that there is a need for more minorities to graduate from high school. Would it be beneficial for a minority student to be involved in a music program? Would this help that student remain in school and finish with a high school diploma? What is the graduation rate of minority students and minority students involved in music? Additionally, there are a few questions to consider in examining this topic. Does involvement in a music program impact grades and academic performance? Are lower income ethnicities given the means to have their students be in music? Westminster Public Schools is a diverse school district with many minority students. This research could benefit school districts such as these. If it was shown to teachers, students, and families that music education is of benefit academically, perhaps more minority students who need help academically could find an area they excel in. Music could give them a reason to attend school daily and be in their classes. As a music teacher in Westminster Public Schools, I want a way to reach these students and help them
