Krik Krak Essay

Juxtaposition can be best described as the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. Normally, people always seem to believe that there is only black and white or good and bad. However, this does not seem to be the case in real life situations. This book seems to be an incredible opportunity to experience complex stories that expose the harsh reality of life. In the book, Krik Krak, a series of short stories, the author Danticat utilizes juxtaposition to create complex characters that in return create an overall feeling of mixed emotions. The specific examples that best display complex characters creating an overall sense of mixed emotions

There is a scene where the boy asks “ What’s the matter with Papy?” (Danticat 71) to which the mother responds by saying “ ‘ His heart hurts’ ” (Danticat 71). Guy is proud of his son and yet ashamed of himself. As he’s talking to his wife he says, “‘ how a man is remembered after he’s gone? I know the answer now… I remember him as a man I would have never wanted to be’” (Danticat 75). At this point it should be obvious the story is coming to a close. The next day he jumped off the hot air balloon and committed suicide. It is the complex characters such as Guy who create a sense of mixed emotions to the reader. Ernest Hemmingway once said “When writing a novel, a writer should create living people; people not characters. A character is a caricature.” This quote to me exemplifies the importance for an author to create lifelike characters that are not static and are instead dynamic, moving, changing. In Rick Bass’s short story Antlers all three of the main characters can be seen as almost living people who share a genuine connection between their environment and between each other. Bass shows the connection that the three main characters have through their characterization.…

    Examples Of Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition was a key aspect throughout the story that allows the reader to stay interested. Juxtaposition creates an intriguing connection between some very different things and makes your mind work to keep up with the story. The first instance of juxtaposition that I noticed was in the first sentence, “The grandmothers-dozens of them- find themselves at sea.” In that sentence alone, it shows the juxtaposition between being lost at sea but having many people around you to keep you company. The first image that I envision when I think about being lost at sea is being all alone, but Ausubel made there be multiple grandmothers, which I think is because death takes us all to the same eventual end.…

In The Devil in the White City, a novel published in the year 2003, Erik Larson describes the greatness of both the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 and one of America’s first serial killers, H.H. Holmes. In the novel, Larson uses juxtaposition, imagery, and repetition to emphasize the characteristics of good and evil for the reader. In his implementations of juxtaposition, Larson directly contrasts the characteristics of opposing elements. In his contrast between “the moral” and “the wicked, Larson describes the argument between “free love” and “divorce” to show the degradation of the boundary between the two for the reader (12).…

In the short story Marigolds, Collier uses Imagery, Flashback, and Juxtaposition to create her voice. She writes that “I remember , another incongruency of memory- a brilliant splash of sunny yellow against the dust. ”(16), which is an example of juxtaposition because it's comparing both things for a purpose. An example of imagery is “multicolored skein of fourteen-going-on-fifteen as I recall that devastating moment where i was more women than child. ”(17)…
