Juxtaposes In 'The Great Debaters'

Improved Essays
In the very beginning of the movie, “The Great Debaters” there were two men fighting. One of the men were very young and the other was very big, while they were fighting there were scenes in between where you can see a Reverend speaking. What the Reverend is saying is that if one has education in their life then they have a way out of the darkness. The director of the movie juxtaposes these two scenes because this sends a message to the audience that the young man fighting needs education to have a purpose for in his life.

Yes, I am familiar with the story of the Wiley College debate team, a small Black college in Marshall Texas that, the story is based on a Negro institution going and debating out with white’s institutions. Tolson’s debaters became so well known that they were invited to participate in the first interracial debate ever permitted. The story was not published until recently because of the concern regarding the situation and at a time when blacks endured the daily indignity of discrimination, and racial violence that simmered just beneath the surface. It was Tolson’s belief that the conditions of racism and inequality would be overcome through education, the power of ideas and social organization. Professor Tolson teaches his students the power…

He is failing to see reality in one way or another . In the story he is invited to repeat his valedictory speech in which he said that " humility was the secret , indeed , the very essence of progress" (449) before the white leaders of the town. These men, however, humiliate the protagonist and some other black youths by forcing them to engage in a "battle royal," a blindfolded fist fight in which the last standing participant is victorious and tempting them to fight for counterfeit coins tossed on an electrified rug. Even after being degraded, beaten up, used, and treated like an animal the narrator still wants to impress his abusers and he delivers his oration. During the speech the men ridicule him and only make it more painful to go through with it in the already disturbing circumstances.…

When the Appellant argued his two counts of Class B felony burglary charges, Keller argues that the farmhouse he broke into had lost its status as a dwelling because the house had been left vacant for twelve years, and that while Hardwick was remodeling the house it had yet to regain its status as a dwelling. Keller had based his argument on the statutory definition of dwelling in the Indiana Code section 35-31.5-2-107: “‘Dwelling’ means a building, structure or other enclosed space, permanent or temporary, moveable or fixed, that is a person’s home or place of lodging”, arguing that while Hardwick’s family was at the house every day, because they were not sleeping there the house could not be considered a dwelling. The State counters Keller’s…

In the middle of the Battle Royal, the narrator says “I wanted to deliver my speech more than anything else in the world, because I felt that only these men could judge my true ability” (7). The narrator is aware that his speech does not encompass his true feelings about relationships between African Americans and white people, but he still believes that he must cater to what the white men want to hear. He believes, as a result of the racist structure of society, that only the white man’s opinion is capable of validating him as a person, which is embracing the master narrative. The narrator’s desire to deliver his speech is ultimately what causes him to fight so desperately in the Battle Royal and sink below society’s expectations for him. Instead of being the civilized man that the narrator believes that he is, he acts savagely toward the other fighters in the battle, which sinks below the “desirable conduct” that he is known for (2).…

With gun control debates emerging as a major topic in the past election and currently in our communities, it is imperative to distinguish the justification for the allowance of guns to remain apart of our society. Michael Huemer and Daniel Demetriou both suggest that individuals have a prima facie right to own a gun and that prohibition of such would violate the right to self defense. Both Huemer an Demetriou offer their own respective conclusions without citing the second amendment. Offering arguments without citing the second amendment is beneficial because typically those who oppose gun control commonly use the amendment as their sole source of justification. Huemer’s and Demetriou’s arguments both offer different and unique reasons in…
