Adnan Syed Case

Improved Essays
Adnan Syed, my client, was convicted of first degree murder in 1999. He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Hae Min Lee. Her cause of death was manual strangulation and her body was buried in Leakin park, Baltimore. Adnan was convicted because of one sole witness, Jay Wilds. He testified that Adnan killed Hae and forced him to help bury her body. His details on what they did with the body and what he and Adnan did that day were striking. Because of him, Adnan was convicted even though Adnan insisted otherwise. Now, we have even clearer evidence that points to Adnan NOT being the murderer. Firstly, Jay Wilds' inconsistent testimony. Secondly, Jay's timeline and the cell tower evidence. Thirdly, the witness Asia McClain. The defense …show more content…
The prosecution may argue that the detail of Jay's testimony is enough to validate it. Details like his testimony and its alignment with the cell phone and cell tower records and the location of Hae's stolen car. But once you dig down a bit, these points are lost in a sea of inconsistencies. One. His testimony has been constantly altered as the first trial went on. For instance, the state park was an important area in his original timeline (it was the place where he and Adnan discussed the murder of Hae). But in the court room, he had completely removed that area from his testimony. Why? Because the phone tower records never pinged near the park. Once his testimony was altered however, they did. What happened to the park? Why wouldn't police and the prosecution mention it in court either? We just aren't sure. Two. Jay's friends testify that they had heard a different version of his story. Importantly, Best Buy wasn't the place where Jay saw Hae's body. Instead they say he saw it at the pool hall. Three. Police interviews with Jay began three hours after Jay was brought in for questioning. This means that in those unheard three hours the police could have altered Jay's story. This suggests that police and prosecutors could have done this to support their argument. By no means is the defence saying that Jay Wilds could have murdered Hae Min Lee. He clearly has no motive as many people speculate. But we must ask the jury to consider why Jay's testimony was emphasised as concrete when it clearly had gaping holes in

One thing about this case is undeniably certain. Jay is somehow connected to the murder of Hae Min Lee. And I have an aching feeling that he is closer to it than he is letting on. Jay’s stories do not add up. Could be that they’re never the same, could be that his friend’s stories are fishy too, or it could be that he is trying way too hard to appear innocent.…

Billy Joe Brown was giving false evidence, and told the court that Dustin Turner baited Jennifer Evans to the car where Billy Joe Brown killed her. However the way Billy Joe Brown was telling his story was literally impossible to happen. Billy Joe Brown told the court that they had Jennifer Evans arms under the back of the seats and her legs by the clutch. When they brought this evidence to the court, they never brought the car in, they only brought in the car seats. This made it false evidence, because if they use the same car, they would have realized how ridiculous his story…

Ladies and gentlemen of the Jury, On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee looked forward to another eventful exciting day at Woodlawn High School. Sadly this was not any ordinary day when the afternoon came around and Hae went missing. This was undoubtedly a horrible tragedy but the evidence will strongly support that Adnan Syed is not guilty. The state's main evidence will strongly depend on the claims of Jay Wilds a criminal and he is known to change his story multiple times.…

There is too much leisure time in the way Jay has described the timeline. Also, if Jay is telling the police that he is innocent and Adnan is guilty why wipe the fingerprints and throw the clothes away. The payphone must’ve been somewhere else. Jay probably forgot how the day went for there to be leisure time. He probably did not want to be involved in the first place and did not want to go to the cops at first.…

In addition, Jay was able to take the police “to where the car was” which was huge to the states case. Jay’s ability to lead to authorities directly to the car in question is vital to the investigation and proves that he was being truthful in his testimony. Another factor that proves Jay’s story is true is that there is another witness who heard the same story from a friend. The witness, a girl named Laura, was talking with a friend when he informed he earlier that day he was with his friend and he saw Hae’s dead body in the back of a trunk. When asked who her friend was with, she replied “I think his name was Adnan” thus being a secondary proving Jay’s story is both, correct and accurate.…

Things were always being taken out of the story or new details were being added, One of the main things that was never really set in place is where adnan called jay to pick him up. In the first interview with the police jay had said that adnan told him to come a spot where they would frequently get drugs and he said that he got there and adnan showed him hae in her car dead. But in a later interview that was totally gone and a new place was added into the story. Jay now said that adnan called from a best buy pay phone and showed him the body in the parking lot. Later the detectives had Jay draw up a map of best buy with the pay phone on the outside of the best buy.…

Over the course of the years, many have been wrongfully convicted and accused of crimes they did not commit. The mission of the judicial system is to prove your guilt and if they can successfully do so beyond a reasonable doubt, then you will be convicted of that crime. Everyone walks into the court innocent until proven guilty, but unfortunately some proven guilty people are still very much innocent. In one case where this so happened to be true was during the case of Brenton Butler. Brenton Butler was accused of allegedly robbing and murdering an elderly woman at a nearby hotel in his hometown Jacksonville, Florida.…
