In a study shown in 2005, 68% of 405,000 released were arrested within 3 years of being released and 77% were arrested within 5 years of being released. The returning rate was highest with males and young adults. 84% of teenagers were arrested for new crimes committed. 2 million teenagers under the age of 18 were arrested in 2008. As in 2010, 100,000 were serving time in a juvenile facility. After being released, teens go back into the lifestyle they were in before they got arrested. Usually, when teens go back into that lifestyle that don’t know how to change because that’s what they have been around their whole life. Understanding that, teenagers should go into a rehab center to get their mind right.
Mayra, who is serving a life sentence at only 17 years of age, has been in and out of jails her whole life. At only 13 years of age she dropped out of school, she grew up being abused by her father. She is a returning juvenile. She is an example of returning to a unstable lifestyle and not being able to change around the same people who encourage her to do the wrong things.
Conclusion, I believe juveniles shouldn’t receive life sentences. Being a teenager in a grown facility being around gangs, violence and much more won’t help an individual change. Teens are more likely to come out of the facility more violent and the urge to do more unruly things which causes the returning
