There are some very pronounced differences between the adult correctional system and the juvenile correctional system. Within the adult correctional system there is a greater emphasis on punishment, surveillance, arrest, and incarceration. In contrast within the juvenile correctional system the is very limited use of detention due to the fact that research has found that it only exacerbates the issues that lead to delinquent behavior. Instead the juvenile correctional system tries to divert all of the juveniles they possibly can from the juvenile justice system. There is also a greater emphasis on prevention of juvenile crime by providing interventions for at risk youth, many of these programs are not run by the court.…

The question is, do we sentence these children and teens to incarceration for the rest of their lives, or do we instead try to rehabilitate these teens and children and find the root causes of these problems? Do we not give them a second chance and let them rot in prison, or do we rehabilitate them and help them become important members of society?…

After watching yesterday’s episode of “Lock Up”, I believe that the prison system has not rehabilitated them. One inmate was in confinement for more than ten years and basically lost his will to live, at one point he stated how he missed things that people take for granted. He wrote poems to pass the time, and almost cried when he saw the moon for the first time. Another one was put in confinement because he attacked an officer, but no one believed the inmate. Punishment does not improve any of the inmates behaviors, it is proven in the amount of people that return to prisons.…

Today, more youths are involved in gangs, murders, and assaults than history has shown. So, if these children are capable of committing adult crimes, shouldn’t they face adult consequences? It seems that the severity of juvenile crime has risen so much, that it is hard to distinct it from adult crimes.
