Juvenile Justice Internship Report

I’m currently a senior studying criminal justice at the University of Baltimore (UB). To satisfy a requirement for my degree program, I was required to secure an internship in my major. I believe this is an excellent way for me to gain experience as well as practical knowledge of the day to day operation concerning criminal justice work. My internship search began at the beginning of my senior year, without much success. I searched online job websites, made phone calls and reached out to family and friends. However, after attending an internship workshop at the college and looking through the literature that was handed out, I reached out to some of the agencies. I filled out an application with the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) and waited for a reply. I checked my emails daily during winter break and finally received a response from the coordinator of volunteer services at DJS. Things started to move and to say the least, I was excited. At the meeting, he discussed policies, procedures, and the juvenile justice system case interaction flowchart. He went into detail when explaining his area of expertise in case management. This area focuses on detention risk assessment. For example, an assessment of a juvenile is conducted to see if they are a risk to the public. Assessments are also used if a juvenile fail to appear for court. Therefore, in using these procedures it will be determined if the at risk juvenile is placed in detention, detained or released to a parent or guardian. The meeting went well, and he provided me with numerous documents needed to begin the internship. To my surprise, I was notified that I would be accompanying him on an intake case on my first day. It seems like I’ll be jumping right in learning the criminal justice
