In the early part of our country’s history, certainly prior to the American Revolution, juvenile delinquency as we think of it today did not exist. That is, from the first days of the founding of the original colonies through the Revolutionary War, there was no such thing as delinquency. Perhaps the primary reasons for this were, first, that the colonies were fundamentally agricultural and children were expected to work along with their parents to survive (Oliver and Hilgenberg, 2006). Second, parents were responsible for the actions and behaviors of their children (Walker, 1998), consequently, most often misbehaving children were handled at home by their parents. Colonial law did, however, make punishable such offenses as running away, incorrigibility,…
Recently I was watching Beyond Scared Straight, a show that broadcasts a juvenile crime prevention program that takes place in prisons around the U.S. In this episode a 17-year-old boy, Jerahn, was facing up to 35 years in jail for credit card fraud. Many would agree and say yes that this boy being nearly an adult should be mindful of his own actions and deserves his sentence. While others, like myself, believe that he should receive a less severe punishment and not be tried as an adult. Each year American juveniles are given sentences that affect their lives greatly.…

They were demonized as representing a new and different breed of delinquents. They clumped every adolescent together and denounced them to be evil, especially the inner-male city minorities. The research attained also highlighted the reasons why recidivism rates are so high within juvenile delinquents. Minor offenses such as technical violations, failure to fulfill probation requirements or domestic abuse within a family member often result in incarceration for the youth. The interview subjects suggested that for such offenses, requiring delinquents to perform community service or putting them away from an unstable family would be the more rational solution rather than putting them behind bars. Such minor offenses often get combined with previous charges and prolong the sentencing period.…

Because of this, the readings in this course prompted several conversations between myself and my boys.…
