There actions are part of the Adolescence Diversion Project. These efforts work to assist juveniles at risk of delinquency through mentoring and community service projects. These are meant to help at risk youth build a stable connect with a mentor and discover their individual strengths. Michigan State University uses many different activities, mainly based around community service, to help members of the program discover and use their personal strengths to benefit their community.
This program has connected with multiple public schools to try to identify which students may qualify for participation in the program. The Adolescence Diversion Project also helps the students utilize resources in which they learn how to make better decisions, use counseling services, and have an older mentor in the community to influence proper decision making. The chosen programs to study included “deviancy training” which is often caused by uncontrolled social atmospheres where students may be coached by their peers into taking part in inappropriate and potentially dangerous behavior (Gottfredson et al., 2011). The reasoning behind this particular type of after school program is to reduce the time that an adolescent has without structure and turn social interaction into a positive experience (Gottfredson et al., 2011)Part of the research includes an analysis of identifying the “crowd leader” and how this group structuring of these cliques can be prevented (Gottfredson et al., 2011).
