Justin Mcleod's The Man Without A Face

As summer of 1968 progresses, Charles is faced with the task of passing an exam to be accepted into St. Mathews, to avoid the constant harassment of his sister. His tutor, Justin McLeod, not only teaches Charles the everyday school curriculum, but also experiences Charles to the many faces of love. From Justin McLeod, Charles has learned the trusting, parental, and sexual faces of love.

As seen in The Man Without A Face, Charles is an outcast. Although, Charles states that he has friends, these are not true friends that prove to be important in Charles’s life. As a result, it is hard for Charles to open up to people. However, through the trust that Justin demonstrates, Charles is able to grasp what it means to trust, and be trusted.

‘That's alright I trust you.’ I felt pretty good when he said that” (Holland 36). Justin revels to Charles that he is the exceptional science fiction writer Terrance Blake. Justin shows trust, as he offers Charles the only copy of his new book. As a result of this trust, Charles is affected in a positive way, stating that he felt good. “So am I. Not just because of this, but because there a boy with me, a boy about your age. He was burned to death.”(Holland 90). Justin explains that he received his scar in a car accident, resulting in the death of a child. Justin demonstrates immense trust in Charles, due to him sharing a critical moment in his past. Justin shows to Charles that he is fallible.
It is revealed throughout the story that Charles is not close to his family at all. He has never experienced parental love from his mother. However, he is taught parental love through Justin. “I guess that means I wish you were my father.’ ‘I wish so too”(Holland 118). As demonstrated, Charles and Justin do not just view each other as friends, but as family, as father and son. Both need love as Charles receives none at home, and Justin has no children. Charles exclaimed this after Justin took Cha¬¬¬¬rles swimming. After feeling a new bond with Justin, and even making contact with him, Charles starts to question his sexuality. In addition Charles starts to look at Justin in a new way. He no longer views him as a teacher with a scarred face, but notices Justin physically in a positive way. Although Justin states that this does not make him gay, and that everyone needs affection, the ideas are still swarming Charles mind. “ Even so, I didn’t know what happened to me until it happened. […] The more I thought about it, the worst I felt about myself, about Justin” (Holland 147). The reader can infer that Charles’s sexuality displayed both emotionally and physically. The readers can also infer that Charles sexuality came out in an erection that became present. However, this could just come from Charles experiencing feelings of comfort, Charles shows that he regrets and does not want to talk about the night.
