Justin Dart Jr. : A Human Rights Pioneer According to ada.gov "The ADA guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to enjoy employment opportunities, purchase goods and services, and participate in state and local government programs" (“Introduction to the Americans with Disabilities Act”). Justin Dart Jr. is credited as the father of ADA and an important human rights activist. Born on August 30, 1930 to a wealthy family, Dart was diagnosed with polio at the age of 18. That diagnosis led him to become a human rights activist for the rest of his life. One of the many deeds that Justin did as an activist is help pass the ADA legislation. This legislation has helped many people live a more normal life than they would have been able to live had this legislation not been passed. It helps disabled people be able to live a more normal life by creating more job opportunities, having easier access to all buildings and all business owners need to be compliant with the customers' needs due to their disability. As the vice-chair of the National Council on Disability he and other council members drafted a national policy which later became the foundation for the ADA. Polioplace.org states "Again in 1988, he, as co- chair of the Congressional Task Force on the Rights and Empowerment of Americans with Disabilities, visited every state including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the District of Columbia, holding public forums attended by more than 30,000 people promoting the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act" (“Justin Dart, Jr. | Post Polio”).
