Justin Bieber On Asch Conformity

Improved Essays
How would you do things differently if you knew that nobody would judge you?

I don’t listen to Justin Bieber when I don’t have my earphone plugged in, even though he is one of my favorite music artists. I don’t answer questions in class because I am scared of being laughed at. There was an experiment named “Asch Conformity Experiment”; the experiment showed how an individual shows his conformity towards the majority. The individual chose the wrong answer showing his confirmation to the group. Not only I but it’s the human nature to tend towards security. If only I knew no one would judge me, I would no longer be scared to be unique and I would definitely gain more self confidence so that I could mark my own footsteps.

In a social experiment conducted by Solomon Asch of 1951, Asch studied the impact of how social pressure from the majority can affect a person to conform (McLeod). The experiment consisted of one participant in a group of actors and all were asked to match the test line to a line most similar. In revealing their answers, the participant was asked to answer last out of the group while the actors all purposely answered incorrectly. With over 12 trials of the experiment, nearly 75% of the participants conformed to answering the question incorrectly at least once. This trend of conformity is also seen in today’s social influence.…

Booker T. Washington, an African-American educator once stated, “in America, through pressure of conformity, there is freedom of choice, but nothing to choose from.” In other words, the world gives infinite choices to make but yet, we decide to make the choices society prefers us to make. In the article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man” Tom Leppard made the wise decision to make the choices he desired to perform instead of conforming. According to dictionary definition, social conformity can be defined as an agreement between an individual's behavior and a group's standards or expectations. One should not change their looks, beliefs, or behavior to fit in with society because it destroys one’s uniqueness and humans are naturally meant to be themselves.…

Every year after AP exams are over, APUSH students—old and current—ask teachers if they can miss their class period to watch the student debates. The hype surrounding these debates were mostly due to three reasons: the controversial topics, the “hot seat questions,” where students are placed on the spot much like in court, and of course, the opportunity to dress up. My partner and I chose to argue against the death penalty, and while I thought our in-class research sessions had been productive, a friend of mine told me she overheard my partner say otherwise in another class. Apparently, she was convinced that she would have to do all the work because “Dana never talks.…

When people are stressed, they don't think straight. In a state of confusion or fear, people tend to join forces, causing them to do the wrong things and follow the wrong leaders (Barnhart). They do not know what, when, or why they should do it. If a person is having a difficult time grasping concepts and ideas, they hold onto any example they can. For example, after an evaluation, when someone asks me how it was, I would always say “I’m not sure” or “It was okay I guess”. By replying in such ways, regardless of whether I did good or bad, others wouldn’t think that I’m trying to come off as better than how I thought I was, or how I actually am. Although this was a negative representation of me in front of my peers, I would portray myself differently when I was in public with others. It was said that one’s actions in public are different than those in private (page 5).…
