15 March 2017 Justifying Evil in the Renaissance
Too most people, there is a distinct difference between good and evil. Evil defined as morally wrong or bad. The Renaissance era was a time of religious upheaval. Disputes concerning which church had the appropriate view of Christianity would be the dominate one. defying the principles of religion was scarce. Laws were based on religious practices. Monarchies forced their religion on its citizens dictating what behaviors are good or evil. Thus, challenging what is righteous would defy the traditional meaning of good versus evil. In Paradise lost and Dr. Faustus, the authors challenged the traditional meaning of evil by illustrating how skepticism justifies evil behavior to be acceptable.
When John Milton wrote paradise lost, it was of religious upheaval retold the creation of the earth story in the bible. During this time, period its believed that people had the to follow the same religion whether you believed it or not. Milton, challenged religion in the sense that he justified the behavior of his characters and made it ok to question religion. In paradise lost, Satan’s behavior can be justified to be a good thing. If god is the creator of all things, then who created him? Even though Satan was selfish and power hunger he was only challenging something that seemed like a dictatorship to him. Satan questioned why cant I be powerful or the ruler why are you the creator and where taking orders. God could be perceived as a dictator according to Satan “God can have his dictatorship and reign of tyranny up there”. Satan Challenging god to a battle got him knocked into hell.
