She wanted to get revenge on a woman named Rebecca Nurse, so she convicted her of witchcraft. She convicted her because Rebecca Nurse had been there to deliver all of her 9 children, however only 1 survived. With this evidence, she decided Nurse was a witch who used her spirit to kill her children, especially since Nurse had plenty of children herself. “(Ann) Putnam: That is a notorious sign of witchcraft afoot, Goody Nurse, a prodigious sign!” (25) With that being said, Ann is successful with her plot. Rebecca, along with John Proctor, is hanged. ”Rebecca: Let you fear nothing! Another judgment awaits us all!” (144) Neither of them would confess the crime they supposedly committed, and they paid for it with their lives. Rebecca gets her revenge fully, as it was her intent to see Nurse killed. Rebecca getting her revenge is another way the court was corrupted through vengeance, and envy. “Francis: Aye, Cheever come and take her in his wagon. We 've only now come from the jail, and they 'll not even let us in to see them. This time his actions not only ride upon revenge, but also greed, for he used his daughter Ruth, who went along with the other girls who pretended to see spirits, to accuse certain people to gain rights to their land after they died. ”Danforth: Mr. Putnam, I have here an accusation by Mr. Corey against you. He states that you coldly prompted your daughter to cry witchery upon George Jacobs that is now in jail” (96). He played a huge role in initiating the witch hunt, since every chance he got he would accuse someone. Its not surprising however, since he strongly believes in witchcraft as well, since the death of his seven children as well. “Putnam: Don 't you understand it, sir? There is a murdering witch among us” (16). So not only does he accuse many innocent people, he was also trying to gain the land of those who were hanged, such as a man named George Jacobs. “Giles: My proof is there! If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property - that 's law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land!” (96). He also joins in with his wife to accuse Rebecca Nurse, since he wants to get revenge for the death of his children as well.
