Justice In The Crucible

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power" (Abraham Lincoln). In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, many of the people stand the adversity that the trial brings except for a few with power. John Proctor has the power to tell the truth and end the chaos, testing the true character of him. The play takes place in Salem in 1692. Chaos erupts when girls in the town begin falsely accusing innocent people of witchcraft, a highly punishable crime. With corrupt judges in the court, only John Proctor, who knows the truth can try and stop the madness. Justice was never served to the honest people who would not confess to the false accusations put upon them. Ultimately, justice was not served in Salem because power, revenge, and fear motivate the characters. Power can make or brake a person. Power can cause humility or corruption in a person. It injured their reality and made them collapse. As Proctor begins to realize the truth, he tells Marry Warren that she must come to court and tell the judges what she knows about Abby. Consumed in her fear, Marry cries out telling Proctor what will happen if she is taken to court with him. She explains that Abby will turn on, not only her, but also on Proctor; "Abby'll charge lechery on you, Mr. Proctor!"(1310). Proctor, excepting his fate, takes Marry to confess but after great sabotage from Abby, she is unable to do it. In fear, Marry cries out that Proctor is involved in witchcraft too. In earlier parts of The Crucible the same type of thing occurred. When Trtuba is accused of witchcraft she doesn't really have control of confessing or not. Parris threatens, "You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to your death, Tituba"(1284). She decides she wants her life and confesses to witchcraft in

    Proctor’s pride first majorly affects his decisions when he refuses to go to court and reveal that he knows the girls are frauds for fear of his lechery being promulgated. Proctors’ hesitance is shown when Elizabeth urges him to go to court, prompting, “I would go to Salem now, John – let you go tonight” and he respond with “I’ll think on it” (Miller 1163). Proctor comprehends how calamitous the circumstances is, yet he refuses to reveal the truth of the situation for fear of lechery being charged on him and his name being ruined. Because Proctor waits until his wife is arrested and the witch hunt is full throttle to reveal the truth, the court, who is in the midst of the hunt, believes that his claims are really just part of an insidious plot to overthrow them and they arrest him and schedule his hanging.
