Justice system vs. Reputation Has the justice system in present time and in the past has been fair to every inmate in the prisons throughout the United States? Throughout this paper I will explain how the justice system has and has not been fair to the inmate’s that have been through a court of law. There are improvements that the justice system can make to make sure that the person who committed the crime is the person who gets put into prison instead of a person who is innocent. Sadly the justice system in the United States uses a person’s past against them in a court of law. People also believe that if they tell the police that they committed the crime instead of trying to maintain their innocence (Garrett). “Astonishingly, more than 1 out of 4 people wrongfully convicted but later exonerated by DNA evidence made a false confession or incriminating statement” (Garrett). When the police questioned Brendan they could tell he wasn’t there mentally so they knew they could easily trick him and force him to say what they wanted him to say. The thing that stands out is that police aren’t given any further training how to talk or question somebody who has a mental disability. When they questioned Brendan they kept threatening him by telling him that they knew what he did. For Brendan who isn’t there all mentally he believes that he did something and that they know something that he doesn’t so to him by saying that he did it. He believes he’s going to be let go by complying with the police and telling them what they wanted hear come from him. “Sometimes law enforcement use harsh interrogation tactics with uncooperative suspects, but some police officers, convinced of a suspect’s guilt, occasionally use tactics so persuasive that an innocent person feels compelled to confess” (Garret). D.C Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier says “The criminal justice system in this city is broken,” (Lanier). Chief Lanier described a situation when a man who was on house detention ankle bracelet quit working. The ankle bracelet became dysfunctional and the police were unable to track the fugitive. The guy ended up going on a crime rampage that started in Maryland. According to Lanier the ankle bracelet quit working on Aug. 12. The agency that supervises people who are on house detention didn’t tell or do anything about the ankle bracelet going offline. With somebody felling at their job which is simple they shouldn’t be allow to work for any kind of job in the justice
