Individual Rights In A Just Society

Justice is subjective; it is bound by each person’s different views and morality, subject to discrimination and the prejudice of a single being’s upbringing and experience. However, the most moral and common view of justice and more importantly a just society is one in which all peoples within the bounds of state’s borders, be they visible or invisible, are allowed the privileges of life, liberty and a secure person but as such are subject to the laws of state. Much reminiscent of the American document with rights along the same lines, Tomas Jefferson’s The Declaration of Independence, which proclaims all citizen’s three inalienable rights as “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. The right to one’s self and body can be classified to a right against slavery of a person or peoples by their fellow man. Article 4 states clearly, “No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.” Slavery comes in many forms from sexual exploitation, to intensive labor, to even domestic labor, and as such should not be overlooked no matter how it may look on the outside. A just society is one that does not allow the subjugation of others regardless of the outcome; though a society like Omelas from Ursula LeGuin’s short story, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, may seem just and almost utopian, the people of Omelas continue to allow the subjugation of a single child, allowing their happiness to rest upon the immense suffering the single child faces, thus meaning societies like Omelas are unjust as they allow the increased perversion of the child’s right to self. As of 2014 the country of India is officially the country with the highest slave count at a 14.3 million people recorded in slavery (Hess). Although India is not a war torn country or a country in political turmoil, it still is the number one country for slavery, this shows that not only could a war torn country over look some things but also a country with an exponentially large population can come to overlook this treatment of its peoples simply because there are too many people to keep track of. Human trafficking is also an exuberantly lucrative business the International Labor Organization, or ILO estimates a 4,000 dollar income from the trafficking of a single person (King). According to the video from PBS, Modern Day Slavery, a greater share can be earned by those in the sexual exploitation side which accounts for close to 58% of the trafficking business where two out of every three children trafficked are
