I believe the washing of the feet was symbolic. In the time of Jesus, the people wore sandals, so dirt and mud would cling to the people’s bare parts of their feet. Jesus used a cloth and wiped the filth from their feet, cleansing them. I think this action seems to be a foreshadowing of what Jesus was going to do on the cross. The Bible states in Jeremiah 31:34 that God will forgive mankind’s sin and wickedness. In this case, the teachers of the law were correct about believing that only God can forgive sins; however, they failed to recognize that Jesus was God Himself. In this story, Jesus declared He was God, since He forgave the sins of the paralyzed man. As the Son of God, Christ had all of the authority to cleanse the man of his unrighteousness, regardless of what the religious leaders thought. The main purpose of His ministry was not healing, but rather teaching others who would listen about the Kingdom of God and forgiving sin.
