Strengths:
The greatest strength of the just war theory is that it protects the right to life of innocent people such as civilians and the non-combatant population from being harmed. The just war theory clearly outlines that
The “Just War” theory was created with the intent of helping determine whether someone could justify war ( jus ad bellum), what the conduct during war should be (jus in bello), and if the end goal was for peace or termination of the war (jus post bellum). Before the Crusades, Pope Urban II gave speeches to rally up support for war against Muslims who had taken control of Christian land. Although Urban II’s ideas seem reasonable, they actually contradict the “just war” theory. He uses any means to make war justifiable, but his speech was missing a few aspects to make it so.…
Throughout history there has always been a predicament that led to war. In that case, it is safe to assume that there will always be war, and that war can be morally justifiable. By society's standards "morality" is typically associated with the creation or demand for peace and independence. In order to obtain peace when there is a threat one must defend oneself or attack the oppressor.…
“War does not determine who is right- only who is left,” is a quote by Bertrand Russell. This spectrum expresses the casualties of war. In other words, Russell means war is used as an outlet to define a “winner”, or in this case, someone who is right. The veiled truth is that there are no true winners of war when comparing the damage created and the lives lost. Looking at war through that perspective, John F. Kennedy, among others, also agreed.…

In the fourth edition of Just and Unjust Wars by Michael Walzer, Walzer discusses the crime, logic, rules, morals of soldiers, and finally the war convention. As discussed in the previous reading, Holsti also addresses the logic and war convention that must take place at the end of each war in order to ensure more satisfaction between the two sides in battle. Waltzer states that is is possible to fight a just war unjustly and for an unjust war to be fought in strict accordance to the laws of war. The author throughout this reading talks about how war is a crime. Walzer asks, "why is it wrong to start a war?”…
1A Aquinas’ three conditions that make war “just” are: Proper authority, Just cause, and the right intention (PP. 4). The first condition states that war can only be declared by the highest authority in government, the head of state. The purpose of declaring war is to give the other state a chance to make peace. If the parties involved are not able to reach a peaceful settlement, then the head of state of of the second nation must refuse to resolve. At this point, both sides have tried to come to peace and haven’t and are aware that war is coming.…
This is a set of traditional military ethics. Just war theory deals with the justification of how and why wars are fought. Ultimately Just War Theory attempts to establish long lasting peace and fairness. Justin would also like to set up an agreement with Mexico in a more productive and liberal manner. Canada has consistently had a very liberal relationship with both The United States and Mexico.…

Assess the Athenians’ argument and actions from the standpoint of pacifism and just war theory. Which position do you find most compelling, and why? Just War theory portrays a practical look at the morality of war in comparison to pacifism, allowing the opportunity to form international procedures and protocol in an attempt to control conflict. During The Peloponnesian War the Athenians offered a valid and in-depth argument on their views of justice in war, over time this has developed into many different perspectives on the place of war in international politics, most noticeably pacifism and just war theory.…

Since his analysis revolves around engineering systems failures that could cost lives and both are released with known flaws, the cases are deemed analogous.…
Even before World War One, the desire to abolish the cycle of war was apparent in civilized society. This was made apparent by William James with his essay “The Moral Equivalent of War”. In his essay, James argues through anecdotes and multiple viewpoints that another method besides warfare should be used to advance civilization. James utilizes perspective throughout his essay to strengthen his argument through an ethos appeal. Throughout his work, he consistently acknowledges two parties: pacifists and advocates of war.…
The aim of Just War Theory is to provide a guide to the right way for states and countries to act in potential conflict situations. It only applies to states or countries and not to individuals however an individual can use the theory to help them decide whether it is morally right to take part in a particular war. A Christian would agree with the Just War theory because it gives a reliable guide of what is acceptable when war is to be broken out (and there was also wars in the Bible like in Deuteronomy 20 when Israel was told that they will be going into war. Also in 2Chronicles 32). For example, war must be the last resort which means that you must have tried other options like talking it out to solve the problem before you engage in war.…
