In the short story, “Just Lather,That’s All” by Hernando Tellez, a rebel barber conceals his identity and faces the dilemma of whether or not to kill his customer, Captain Torres. Ultimately, he decides not to do so, then Captain Torres discloses the fact that he knows him and was only there to find out if he will actually kill him. In several ways, having the short story written in the first person point of view is very essential. Firstly, the point of view allowed the readers to be informed about the characters’ personalities. In this way, barber’s secret identity is revealed. His train of thoughts and memories of his past were ways for the audience to be able to sympathize with him and his people. Similarly, Captain Torres’ distasteful character …show more content…
Secondly, the barber’s point of view reflects how the barber and Captain Torres are, in a way, each other’s character foils. At that time, people of different professions have different perspectives on how to attain honour. In the barber’s eyes, murdering him would defy the way he sees himself and his job. He “prides himself on never allowing this to happen to a client”, referring to accidentally opening up a single customer’s pore. It can be seen that the “conscientious” barber treats his customers equally, and as equals, despite their atrocious backgrounds. Meanwhile, Captain Torres says that “killing isn’t easy”, but it is revealed that he kills numerous people in a gory manner, as long as they are rebels, and takes pride on it. He does not need to analyze his actions, and he is “not afraid” and a “calm man”, unlike the anxious barber. Lastly, the barber’s point of view contributed to other main fiction elements. Knowing that he is a rebel, it sets the atmosphere to be somewhat tensed and uneasy. The audience is made apprehensive by the thought that at any time, Captain Torres can find out, and get him

Flaws are common in the human race. Attempts to fix these flaws by both outside pressures and by internal forces provides the basis of many literary works. One of these stories, occurring when the central character was in the fifth grade, is entitled “Go Carolina” and chronicles David Sedaris’s attempts to thwart his speech therapy teacher as she endeavors to correct his lisp. Because the story is told in first person it makes it that much more interesting. If “The Yellow Wallpaper” would have been told by anyone else, it would have been pretty bland. For example: if the story would have been told by a third person omniscient narrator, like “The Story of an Hour”, the impact would not have been the same. Even if the story would have been told by John, her husband, or Jennie, her husband’s sister, it would not have had the same amazing effect it did when Jane is the one that tells it. Because Jane tells the story the reader gets a very unique insight into her life that no one has, except her.…

Memories are what builds a person’s personality and outlook. Collected as a human’s life runs its track, decisions are made based on what knowledge their senses gather and processed through a window of perspective. However, this window itself was formed by memories, its foundation and framework constructed by the experiences of childhood. Impressionable and void of history, what happens in the youthhood may drastically affect all future choices, goals, and relationships to be made. Ralph Ellison narrates the portions of his earliest days in the semi-autobiography “On Being the Target of Discrimination”, where he recalls the effects of racism had on his life.…

Two of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado, are told through first-person perspective. Some critics dislike first person point-of-view because it only shows the story through one perspective. The reader is confined in the narrator’s mind, unclear if what other characters think about. Also the story can change depending on what the narrator shows. If the narrator’s mind is altered, then the story is too.…
