Just Lather That’s All is a short story written by Hernando Tellez, the story is told with a tilted point of view and through the eyes of one of the main characters named Barber. Many conflicts throughout the story between the two main characters and Tellez uses more imagery and symbolism to communicate to his readers that give you the feeling and the work between Barber and Captain Torres. Hernando Tellez describes Captain Torres, the shaving cream and razor blade using imagery and symbolism to paint a scene in the reader’s head. With Tellez using a different tone for actions when describing Captain Torres at the very beginning of the story, “He said nothing when he entered” (page 1, Line 1). No doubt in his mind you can tell that Barber was very upset and but was still able to be professional and show no emotion. He begins to ask “how many did you get?” Fourteen they have captured and killed Captain Torres says, they went deep into the woods to find those guys. Not one them comes out alive, not one. “The town must have learned their lesson from what happened the other day,” Captain Torres Implies. Torres closed his eyes with a tiring look on his face and sat in the chair waiting for Barber to apply the lather on him. Barber has a flashback of when Captain Torres ordered the town to come to the school patio to see some of the rebel that were captured were hung, which made him even angrier because he was so close to his face and he wanted to do something so badly. He realized he was about to have his hands on his face so he would have an upper hand once he starts using the razor blade on his face. Barber begins to put the lather on his face and Captain Torres continues to poke fun at him by saying “it would be so easy for me to go straight to sleep,” almost knowing for sure that Barber wouldn 't have the audacity to try anything that could get him in trouble or even killed in his own barbershop. He goes to say “but there’s a lot I have to accomplish this afternoon.” Barber stops lathering and asks him as if he was very …show more content…
In his mind, he isn 't a murderer and doesn 't have it in him to kill like that, no matter the circumstances that he has put him and his rebels through. He is honorable barber and he came to him to get a clean shave and he put his work on him and just rather have lather on his hands than blood.
Finishing up the shave, Captain Torres sits up looks into the mirror and just feels fresh and brand new and says thanks for his hard work. He goes to put his stuff on at the door and before he exits the shop he says “They told me that you’d kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn 't easy. You can take my word for it.” He heads down the street. He basically came to see if he was man enough to do what they said that he was going to do and that was a very bold statement made by Captain Torres and he did it with authority.
The imagery and symbols used in Just Lather That’s All written by Hernando Tellez helps show the unspoken conversation between the two characters. The symbols are used majority throughout the story and imagery is used not so much in the story, but you can see the story was very conflicting as it went along. Tellez used these styles of writing for his readers to read between the lines and figure out what he is saying so he doesn 't have to come out and say

Using symbols in stories creates a mood or emotion to try and represent something else of a character, a situation, or an object. “A dead cucumber-vine dangled from the porch like the drape streamer tied to the door for a death, and the thought flashed through Ethan's brain: “ If it was there for Zeena—“ (Wharton, 45). The dead cucumber-vine metaphorically represents the death of Zeena who might get taken away eventually by her ailement. It almost seems as if Ethan desperately wants for Zeena to die. Her lingering presence in the house does nothing but bring an eerie dread within the household.…

Usually in literature, an author uses an object that can be a symbol that conveys an important meaning. In “Lather or Nothing Else” and “The Gift of the Magi,” Tellez and O’Henry use symbols to express a deeper significance. Using the fob and combs that Della and Jim both give each other for Christmas, O’Henry demonstrates that love is truly what gift giving is about in “The Gift of the Magi.” The very sharp razor that the barber possesses in “Lather or Nothing Else” represents the choice the barber has to make. Both of these symbols play an extremely important role in the lives of all of the main characters throughout both of the short stories.…
