The Rite Of Passage For “Just Be Yourself”

The rite of passage that is most significant to me is not doing everything that you possibly can to be perfect. A good story that focuses on that specific one is “Just Be Yourself”. In this story, the narrator’s younger self is trying her best to fit in and be like everyone else, but while she is doing that she is slowly losing herself. But, her future self comes back to talk about it with her.

If you had asked any of my peers for a description of who I am, they would have said that I was someone who was shy, and possibly even a bit awkward. This was a personality trait that I had been struggling with throughout the majority of my life. I had grown up as an only child, incessantly feeling out of place among my peers. It wasn’t until the middle of my freshman year of high school that I gained the self-confidence I had only dreamed about.…

Some milestones on the path to growing up could include becoming more responsible and mature, learning to accept death and reality rather than avoiding it, or even learning your mistakes and fixing them instead of worrying about them. Becoming more mature and responsible could be a milestone because it shows how a person changes and grows from childhood to adulthood. In “The Medicine Bag”, Martin became more mature by accepting the medicine bag from his grandfather. After accepting the medicine bag, he was also given the responsibility to pass it down to his son. One of the most defining moments of one’s life is when one discovers who they truly are inside. Growing up, the influences of friends and family are clearly marked on one’s beliefs, ideals, and moral standards, whether they want to believe it or not. The desire to fit in is what pushes many people to do things they may not be comfortable with or believe in themselves; this is alternately called peer pressure. However, even through moments of weakness and the struggle to belong, one shapes and forms their own identity simply by knowing what they do and do not believe in.…

The Battle Against Insecurity One of the most fundamental human characteristics is the desire to be what you are not. Whether it be in wealth, weight, beauty, or intelligence, people aspire to be whatever they believe is superior. Yet, whenever a goal is achieved, it seems to be human nature to find something else that could be changed about oneself. In her lecture, “The Biggest Disease Affecting Humanity: I’m not Enough” Marisa Peer elaborates on how people can find confidence and become content with themselves. Her psychoanalysis of people can be applied to many books, films, or even everyday life.…

The last time I truly felt content in my life was when I was in elementary school, before the media implanted this idea of “perfection” in my mind, before I was seen as a geek, before the sole thing that mattered was the number of someone’s followers on Instagram, before I was objectified, before I hated myself. How did I not apprehend this before? Through all of these years, I solely wanted to fit in, but why? Why would I want to suffocate my personality" just to be another face in a sea of stereotypes and uniformity? The friendships I had cultivated and all the things I had done were done under the guise of self-hate, judgment, a prolific persona, a girl who so wrongly desired to be just another face among the faces.…

Being myself is effortless over attempting to mimic others’ behaviors. When I am true to myself, I am not required to stress so much about anyone contradicting or having negative opinions to say when I do not choose the same decisions as them. The pressure to look like everyone around and conform to society decreases as I learn my own self worth. Showing my own character by doing what I trust is correct, dressing the way I am comfortable in and by not letting people's opinion influence my decisions , has permitted me to grow as a person. For example, I participate in activities that I enjoy and take classes that I find accommodating, to allow myself to stay true to myself.…
