Ladies and gentleman of the jury: The Pigman by Paul Zindel is an exceptional piece of literature that is great for projects. With only a few shortcomings, The Pigman is a great choice for young adult readers looking for a true, raw story and is a favorable pick among schools. To begin, the story is narrated by John Conlan and Lorraine Jensen, two teenagers in the late sixties. Through a difficult series of events, they learn responsibility. This responsibility is a maturity which is portrayed differently than your average "coming of age" story. Although flow in some segments of the story could have been changed, The Pigman is a wonderful story full of life lessons and the harsh truth of life.

Not only was the flow of the scene unsettling, the ending was cruel. On page 143, John decides to have a party at Pignati's house. Origin of this idea is not very clear. On 148, Lorraine invites a bunch of new characters that have never been mentioned before and she suddenly knows and invites a band. As the party progresses, the writing feels rushed and spur of the moment. In the end, the kids end up destroying the house, the police are called and Mr. Pignati's comes home devastated. The ending consists of Lorraine's angry and somewhat abusive mother and a broken hearted Pigman.
Some may argue that The Pigman is too outdated to be relatable. But, teenagers can gain a different perspective from the past. It is a gratifying experience to learn about how things were yesterday, so we can create a better today. Also, the sixties is not too different from today's modern world. While reading the book, the reader realizes teenagers then are still the same today. Therefore, The Pigman is not too outdated to be understanding and interesting.
