Knowing the history content of any work can help you fully understand it or at least get a deeper meaning of the story. Susan Glaspell story was written in 1917. The early 1900s was the era of the first wave of feminism (Kang). Women standing up for their rights and their moral beliefs. You can even say that she was a feminist herself. Also, this story is based off a true story. It is quite similar to the story that happened on December 1, 1900 in Indianola, Iowa. While working as a reporter in Des Moines, Iowa, she read an interested story. The story is about a wife, Margaret Hossack that was accused of murdering her husband, John Hossack. She said she was asleep beside her husband, claiming that she did not her any assault, and only heard a door close and a glimpse of light (Stormer, 510). Which sounds unbelievable because he was killed with an axe. Being killed with something like that would make some kind of noise. She went on trial twice, once she served a year and the next trial she was set free, hung jury ended in mistrial (Stormer, 510).
