The American Dream How hard do you have to fight to get what you deserve? Jurgis Rudkus is one of the two characters that will soon find out. He is the main character in the novel called The Jungle that is written by Upton Sinclair. James Braddock is the other character that goes through a fight to be successful. He is the main character in the movie/book of Cinderella Man. Throughout the novel and the movie, the physical, relationship and emotional traits of both Jurgis Rudkus and James Braddock will be compared. In the beginning, both Jurgis and James are very similar. Jurgis is tall, strong, dark complexed and Lithuanian. On the other hand, James is tall, strong, dark complexed as well but James is Irish. Jurgis at the beginning was happy in be in America with his wife and being able to start anew with a baby boy on the way. James was happy because he was winning boxing fights while having a happy family to come home to. They both did not realize what kind of punches would we thrown their way. Both Jurgis and James started to have money troubles to pay for their houses and eventually got kicked out of their homes. Jurgis becomes strict and angry as shown, “His fingers were all frosted, it seemed…., and so little stanislovas spent most of the day dancing about in horrible agony, till Jurgis flew into a passion of nervous rage and sore like a madman, declaring that he would kill him if he did not stop” (Sinclair 121). James on the other side was very sympathetic and tried everything he could to make his family happy. Coming to the end of the novel, Jurgis starts to come back into the everyday world, but trusting in others again and opening his eyes to the corruptness and joining the socialist party. For James, everything starts coming back to him after he wins a fight where a majority titled him to lose. James begins to have faith in himself and his family again when he starts to get a steady income from boxing again. He gets to have his children back and he becomes extremely happy with the way things turned
